Job Description

Job Description:
Under the general supervision of the Building Principal(s) and the Director of Special Education, the Special Education Aide assists the Classroom/Special Education Teacher in supporting the delivery of education/special education programs to students.  Under the direction of the Special Education/Classroom Teacher and the Certified Nurse, the Special Education Aide's primary responsibility is to assist students to develop self-sufficiency, including, but not limited to, medical and mobility, communication, interpersonal and behavioral skills.
The Special Education Aide under the direction of the Certified Nurse will administer medically prescribed procedures, which are the responsibility of the public school system.
 
  Additionally, all aides will be required to assist with student supervision in gathering areas such as the cafeteria, playground, and hallways.

Position Information:
  7.0 hours per day, 5 days per week, 183 days per year

Required Qualifications:
  Minimum of High School or GED diploma or recognized equivalent
  Credential of competency required for all special education paraprofessionals. Competency must be demonstrated and documented by one of the following:

  • Completion of an Associate's Degree or higher ; or
  • Completion of two years of study at an institution of higher education (48 credits); or
  • Completion of the Credential of Competency for Special Education Paraeducators

   PA School Code Chapter 14.105 currently requires 20 hours of staff development each school year
   Current CPR/First Aid Certification
   Competent grammar skills and computer literacy
   Willingness to be trained in areas pertinent to individual student needs
   Strong desire to assist students with academic, social and physical needs

Compensation:
$15.73 per hour, or at current rate, in accordance with the FRESP Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Building Principal and direction of the Special
Education or Classroom Teacher, the Special Education Aide provides support to students
with disabilities to ensure access to educational programs in the least restrictive
environment. The aide assists students in developing independence and self-sufficiency in
academic, behavioral, social, and daily living skills. Responsibilities may include providing
instructional support, behavioral assistance, and personal care as needed.
Additionally, all aides are required to assist with student supervision in common areas such
as the cafeteria, hallways, playground, and during transitions to ensure a safe and orderly
environment.
Qualifications:
• Demonstrate (via portfolio) a minimum of “Entry” level of achievement in the 10
Standards developed by the PDE/Bureau of Special Education (must be achieved within
one year of employment), OR have completed at least two years of study at an institution
of higher education (12–15 credits per semester), OR hold an associate degree or higher in
a related field.
• Current CPR and First Aid Certification (training provided through the District).
• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or equivalent training (provided through the District).
• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Child Abuse, PA State Criminal History, and PDE FBI Clearances as required by the Child
Protective Services Law and PA School Code.
Duties and Responsibilities
Student Support
1. Assist students in developing independence in academic, behavioral, and social settings.
2. Implement individualized education programs (IEPs) under the direction of the Special
Education or Classroom Teacher.
3. Provide instructional support by helping students with note-taking, assignments,
redirection, and scribing when necessary.
4. Follow and support student behavioral intervention or positive behavior support plans as
designed by the teacher or behavior specialist.
5. Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment that encourages student
participation and engagement.

Personal Care and Physical Assistance
1. Provide personal care support to enable student participation in the least restrictive
environment, which may include:
a. Mobility and ambulation (e.g., walker, crutches, wheelchair).
b. Gross and fine motor exercises.
c. Toileting, diapering, and change of clothing.
d. Feeding, grooming, and hygiene assistance.
e. Lifting, transfers, and other physical support as required by the student’s plan.
2. Provide proper emergency assistance in case of illness or injury.
Classroom and Instructional Support
3. Assist teachers with preparation and organization of classroom materials, including
laminating, duplicating, and clerical support.
4. Work with individuals or small groups of students to reinforce skills and instructional
objectives under teacher supervision.
5. Assist with grading, recording data, and maintaining student documentation as directed
by the teacher.
6. Assist in maintaining classroom order, structure, and a supportive learning environment.
Supervision and Safety
7. Supervise students during lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and transitions to maintain
safety and order.
8. Enforce playground and cafeteria rules to prevent accidents and promote positive
behavior.
9. Identify potential safety hazards and report them to the supervising teacher or
administrator.
10. Provide basic first aid as needed and assist in completing accident or incident reports.
Professional Responsibilities
11. Maintain confidentiality of all student information in accordance with FERPA and
District policy.
12. Communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents while maintaining a positive
and professional demeanor.
13. Participate in ongoing professional development as required by the District.
14. Perform additional duties within the scope of employment as assigned by the Principal,
Assistant Principal, or designee.
Physical Demands:
• Regularly walk, stand, and sit
• Occasionally lift/push and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Occasionally stoop, kneel or crouch
Sensory Abilities:
• Strong visual acuity, including close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
• Excellent auditory skills to ensure clear and effective communication.

Evaluation:
