Our Kitchen Assistants work in a fast-paced environment preparing and serving nutritious meals to students to support student learning. The Food Service department works school days only - no nights, weekends, or holidays! This position works 3 hours per day (10:30am - 1:30pm)
A Day In The Life
- Prepare healthy and appealing food
- Utilize sound sanitation standards to meet district, state, and federal guidelines
- Serve food so that students and staff receive their food in a timely and friendly manner
- Assist in tasks necessary for efficient functioning of the food service program (washing dishes, scanning tickets, cleaning, organizing)
- Track inventory and communicate with the manager
- Monitor temperatures of foods, dishwasher, etc ensuring HACCP compliance
- Maintain confidentiality
- Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the food service program
- Perform deep cleaning/defrosting tasks
- Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required by the Board of Education policies and regulations
Profile of a Successful Candidates
- Pass a background check
- Have a current TB test
- Team player
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment
- Basic math and computer skills
- Knowledge of state health regulations
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Food Safety Basics-State Department of Education
- Kitchen experience recommended
- Can spend the day standing (80%) and walking (20%), lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
- Fine finger dexterity used
Environment
- Each school has a commercial kitchen

Primary Purpose:
The purpose of the Kitchen Assistant is to support student learning through preparing and serving
students and staff safe, high-quality meals that meet the Child Nutrition Program requirements with
efficiency, organization, fiscal responsibility and good internal and external customer service.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification: None
Special Knowledge/Skills: ability to understand and follow detailed written or verbal
instructions, interpersonal skills, math skills, team work
Experience: Experience not required
Certifications: KSDE Food Safety Basics within 6 months of hire
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
● Supports the kitchen team by being punctual and ready to work.
● Follows recipes, production records, and other resources to maintain program compliance.
● Actively participates in Food Safety. Adhere to HACCP policies and Kansas Food Code.
● Monitors temperatures of food and equipment ensuring HACCP compliance.
● Assist in daily inventory, restocking supplies, and communication related to ensuring the
necessary resources to function efficiently.
● Assist other kitchen staff with any task that needs to be completed in order to meet deadlines.
● Inspect, sanitize, and clean kitchen and equipment to meet district, state, and federal health
standards.
● Maintain confidentiality as appropriate in order to comply with district, state and federal laws.
● Monitor student meals at the Point of Sale and/or Point of Service. Ensure accurate transactions
and reimbursable meals.
● Prepare, plan, and serve safe, high quality food to students and staff in a friendly and efficient
manner. Provides good customer service.
● Demonstrate effective communication and flexibility with the peers.
● Complete annual training requirements. Attend inservice, meetings and training as assigned.
● Perform other duties as assigned including but not limited to dish washing, cashiering, cleaning,
organizing, and serving for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the
food service program.
