Position Summary

CBN Nano Technologies is developing a cutting-edge scanning probe microscope and its associated software interfaces. This position focuses on designing, building, and testing backend software systems that automate researcher driven experimental workflows. The successful candidate will develop high performance services that support data acquisition, algorithmic data processing, and user-facing workflow tools. The role requires creating robust and maintainable backend components that integrate seamlessly with laboratory instruments, research software, and data pipelines, ensuring reliability and efficiency within a research and development environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop backend components that interface with laboratory instruments using vendor SDKs, hardware communication protocols, or custom control APIs
  • Design and implement backend components that power user-facing visualization and workflow tools, enabling researchers to analyze and interpret experimental results
  • Develop and maintain RESTful APIs that orchestrate laboratory instrument control, workflow automation, and data processing pipelines
  • Collaborate with cross functional experts, including data, product, infrastructure, and instrument operations, to build reliable backend systems that enable automated scientific workflows
  • Work across a broad set of technologies to design, develop, and troubleshoot backend system components end-to-end
  • Stay current with advances in application development, programming languages, and backend engineering practices
Qualifications:

Mandatory Requirements

  • Legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Fluent in English (speak, read, write)
  • Able to obtain and maintain Government of Canada Reliability (Level I) Security clearance

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional experience as a backend or full stack developer
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Physics, or Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Knowledge of relational database technologies such as PostgreSQL
  • Working knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker
  • Experience designing and working with RESTful APIs
  • Proficiency working in Linux and Windows environments
  • Experience with asynchronous/task processing (e.g., Celery, message queues)
  • Working knowledge of modern software development practices, automated testing (unit/integration), CI/CD, version control (Git), code reviews

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with client-side languages (e.g., TypeScript) and JavaScript frameworks such as React for integration with user facing tools
  • Understanding of cloud-native architectures and services (e.g., Azure), including caching/queueing technologies such as Redis
  • Familiarity with scientific/industrial instrumentation automation, scanning probe microscopes and/or experimental workflows
  • Experience in scientific process automation or workflow automation in research or engineering environments
  • Experience integrating software with laboratory instruments, embedded systems, or other hardware-controlled environments
