About the Department

The Caldwell Library is looking for a Youth Services Supervisor to join their team. Individual manages, organizes and oversees children’s and teen services activities at the Caldwell Library; develops, coordinates and implements special programs and events; and performs related work as required.

The principal function of an employee in this class is to manage, organize and oversee children’s and teen services activities at the City of Caldwell Public Library. The work is performed under the general direction of the Library Director. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with board members, employees, patrons, other government agencies, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

The Caldwell Library is looking for a Youth Services Supervisor to join their team. Individual manages, organizes and oversees children’s and teen services activities at the Caldwell Library; develops, coordinates and implements special programs and events; and performs related work as required.

Position Duties

  • Manages, organizes and oversees children’s and teen services activities at the library.
  • Manages the children’s and teen department budget, collection development, programming and department goals.
  • Supervises the Youth Services Assistant, clerks, pages, and volunteers assigned to the Youth Services’ Department.
  • Acts as a liaison to the elementary, middle and high schools and other civic organizations to promote library services.
  • Coordinates the teen volunteer program.
  • Participates on the reference team providing direct customer service.
  • Participates in the library’s online presence including contributing to social media outlets and other web-based technologies.
  • Provides reference assistance, answers questions, and assists customers in selecting materials.
  • Plans and conducts book-based programs and puppet shows for children and young adults and their parents.
  • Provides reference and readers’ advisory service to users.
  • Selects materials for children’s department collection.
  • Oversees the public services area of the library during weekend and evening hours.
  • Provides outreach training on library resources through offsite and onsite workshops.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements special programs and events to promote and increase understanding and use of the library.
  • Coordinates with library staff to manage work schedules and work flow.
  • Responds to information requests from other agencies and the general public. 
  • Keeps designated library staff fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Attends approved meetings, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Communicates and coordinates with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities to help keep a positive work environment as well as works as a team member.
  • Respects the opinion of others and maintains a positive and professional working relationship with employees, supervisors and others.
  • Gives library tours, orientations and presentations.
  • Assists in adult services department.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree; and
  • At least three (3) years of professional library reference experience; or
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Master’s degree in library science/library and information system from an ALA accredited institution is strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Subject to a pre-employment drug test and background check. 
  • Required to work evening and weekend hours.
