GENERAL SUMMARY:
The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor, utilizing curriculum provided from Nebraska WIC.
Receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine periodic contacts with all mothers assigned.
Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding problems.
Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC program.
May counsel women in the WIC clinic.
Is available outside the WIC clinic and the usual 8:00am to 5:00pm working schedule to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems.
Respects each mother by keeping her information strictly confidential.
Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers.
Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to:
WIC nutritionist or breastfeeding coordinator
Lactation consultant
Mother’s physician or nurse
Public health programs in the community
Social service agencies
Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups.
Attends monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor.
Coordinates breastfeeding promotion activities in WIC and in the community.
May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects, events, and duties as assigned.

Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must have breastfed at least one baby for at least 6 months. Must be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and want to help mothers enjoy a positive experience. Flexible with schedule to make calls/text outside normal business hours. Must possess good customer service skills, good interpersonal skills to relate to persons of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and communicate in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner. Able to remain calm and exercise judgement in unusual or stressful situations. Bilingual skills (Spanish and English) desirable.
SCHEDULE:
This is a part-time position, averaging 12-16 hours/week, with availability to provide support outside of regular 8:00 am-4:30 pm office hours. Position requires consistent weekly hours working with clients in the Family Service WIC office, during regular office hours. The specific number of hours will be discussed between supervisor and employee upon hire.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or GED equivalent. Must have breastfed at least one baby (do not have to be currently breastfeeding). Experience in operating personal computers and knowledge of Microsoft office programs.
OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and own mode of transportation at time of new hire and throughout course of employment.
OTHER:
Must be current or past woman utilizing WIC services or currently or previously WIC eligible woman.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
