Description
A Construction Superintendent is a skilled and knowledgeable leader who is responsible to manage, supervise, control and deploy suitable labor, proper tools, equipment and materials to the various tasks required for all phases of the construction of a project from start to completion, whether it is a complete building or partial construction of a building or project, in order to deliver a quality project in a given time limit, per plans, following our Method of Construction, quality and safety standards while working side by side with the project manager, construction manager, sub-trades and other construction team members and is responsible and accountable for the overall outcome of the quality, accuracy, and compliance of any building.
Requirements
The Construction Superintendent is the first tier of supervision who reports and is accountable to the Plant Supervisor and who knows practices and instructs others on the latest techniques in the construction field and makes optimum use of the resources that are available.
The Construction Superintendent is the primary contact with the project sub-contractor’s foreman and will need to coordinate and communicate expected workloads with each of the trades. (Remember the subcontractor works for NRB and their conformance to the flow of work is essential and expected. This is not to say that the subcontractor’s requests do not have to be taken into account as NRB wants all subcontractors to succeed and be profitable also, but flow of work in the MOC plan takes precedence. Any conflicts you have with a subcontractor in this regard should be addressed to the Construction Manager as it will be his responsibility to address these issues with the subcontractor project manager if you are unable to get a satisfactory response from the subcontractor’s foreman.)
The Construction Foreman is responsible for completion of the assigned projects on time and on budget with good quality while being responsible for coordination, control, completion and execution of a particular project with the assigned staff.
A foreman must participate in Method of Construction (MOC) plan development for projects assigned, using the prints, project schedule, and subcontractor vs. NRB scope of work as guides. This participation will be with the Plant Supervisor and Project Manager. After participating in, and receiving the Method of Construction plan from the Plant Supervisor, it is a foreman’s direct responsibility to follow the plan, to communicate issues, problems, road blocks, etc. back to the Plant Supervisor for review, and/or adjustment of the MOC plan.
Note: As Foreman and participant of the MOC plan development you may not always agree 100% with the MOC plan. It is the Plant Supervisor’s responsibility to develop the written plan and the Foreman’s responsibility to take ownership of and institute the plan as if it was his own: complete buy-in is expected and required.
Adhere to all company policies, processes, procedures, rules and regulations at all times; making sure company rules are followed by work crews and sub-trades.
Assess job priorities and assign employees to appropriate job sites/projects
Assure that crews have the proper tools and equipment needed for a job in order to ensure a good output To be able to complete all the stated responsibilities, a foreman should have a dynamic personality so that he can manage the work force and tasks efficiently and effectively; must be able to create and execute project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements; effectively apply our methodology and enforce project standards.
Be a main participant in:
Daily meetings with trades on scheduled work and labor deployment
Morning schedule meetings with the Plant Supervisor
Tool box talks and other safety meetings
Weekly project foreman’s meetings scheduled by the Plant Supervisor
Coordinate scopes of work between the Company and sub-trades; monitor, analyze, review, and coordinate changes in work and spec to keep additional labor and material ticket charges to a minimum
Convey both positive and negative aspects of the project and attitudes of crews and trades to the Plant Supervisor; keep open lines of communication
Ensure buildings are weather tight for nights/weekends and when appropriate during work days; be alert to pending weather conditions
Evaluate quickest and easiest way to complete a job without sacrificing quality
Examine finished product or work and verify against specifications and drawings for compliance and quality; be the first level of quality control in fabrication – check other carpenter’s work
Give clear directions to workers as to what needs to be done to avoid repetitive mistakes; follow-up to assure compliance with directions
Interact with sub-trades to maintain open lines of communication, gain greater cooperation and reduction of labor hours while promoting the quality and “speed to completion” process NRB requires
Maintain a positive attitude with sub-trades and staff
Monitor sub-trades activities against project schedules; verify sub-trade labor levels are sufficient to meet or maintain work completion schedules
Must be able to multi-task and supervise more than one project at a time, competently
Perform construction tasks/work when required, or able
Read, review, understand, and be able to communicate the information provided on all plans, specifications, scope sheets, and other miscellaneous information given for each specific project. Focus is to be placed on details and method of construction to be used.
Stop any work conducted in an unsafe manner. Practice and enforce safety all the time.
Take command and be responsible for jobsite cleanup, neatness, orderly stocking of material, instituting NRB’s Clean Project Site principles daily with crews and sub-trades
Treat all employees, sub-trades, customers, and contacts with dignity and respect
Work as directed by the Plant Supervisor and/or Weld Shop Supervisor; perform work competently to avoid repetitive mistakes
