Job Description

About the Department

We are looking for well-rounded, enthusiastic and responsible youth sports coaches to provide a fun and safe sporting experiencing for our youths. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and implementing basic sports strategies and provide instruction on safe, effective sporting techniques. You should also bolster emotional functioning through coaching. To ensure success as a youth sports coach, you should have extensive experience working with youths, knowledge of basic sports strategies, and good communication skills. A top-class youth sports coach ensures all youth team members enjoy an engaging and uplifting sporting experience. Instructional sports programs and camps are offered year-round for youth sports participants. Activities include a variety of sports and games.

Schedule:
 
This position requires flexible afternoon hours. Programs run Monday-Friday from 3-7 pm. Classes are normally scheduled back-to-back, but cancelations may occur and limit coaches to a single class on a given day. Limited weekend hours may be available. Must be able to commit to a class schedule one season ahead of time.

Position Duties

  • Organize, instruct and supervise an instructional sports program or camp.
  • Supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinate daily lesson plans to show progression of skill.
  • Complete written reports as needed and attend scheduled meetings when necessary.
  • Maintain positive communication with parents, school staff, parks staff, the public and Sports Division.
  • Responsible for the safety and general welfare of the program and participants.
  • Responsible for supervision of inclusion companion(s) and/or interpreter, completion of evaluation reports, and verification of companion timecards.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Sound philosophy of coaching and teaching with emphasis on fun and development of skills.
  • Personal skills in sports specific to position
  • Ability to teach sports skills to children in age-appropriate settings
  • Ability to teach sports skills with introductions, demonstrations, verbal instructions, give positive and effective feedback to participants and parents.
  • Knowledge of age and ability adaptations for activities to ensure equal participation and success.
  • Ability to communicate and gain control over a large group of children.
  • Must be at leasr 18 years old
 
Experience:
 
Class Instructor I (Salary: $25.00)
Requirements: History of participation in specific sports. Background in coaching sports skills or leading children's activities. Must possess effective communication skills, including checking emails. Must have reliable transportation to transport yourself and all equipment needed for classes to each site.
 
Class Instructor II (Salary: $30.00)
Requirements: Meets all requirements of Class Instructor I in addition to over two years teaching experience in subject area. CPR and First Aid certified.
 
Class Instructor III (Salary: $35.00)
Requirements: Meets all requirements of Class Instructor II in addition to holding a sport specific certification in their respective sport from a National Governing Body. OR five or more years teaching experience in subject area, including a minimum of one year (four instructional sports seasons) working for the City of Rockville.
 
Class Instructor IV (Salary: $40.00)
Requirements: Meets all requirements of Class Instructor III in addition to holding a sport specific certification in their respective sport from a National Governing Body.
