Overview

The Certified Technician applies subject matter expertise, high level knowledge and skills to diagnose automotive equipment problems, coordinate and inspect repair work, and provide training to lower-level mechanics to ensure that automotive repair work is performed properly.

Essential Functions

1. Assigns, coordinates, and prioritizes work orders given to mechanics and technicians; approves emergency repair orders to ensure parts needed are ordered so necessary repairs can be made; notifies mechanics that requested parts have been received.

2. Diagnoses and troubleshoots complicated vehicle repair problems using diagnostic equipment and visual inspection; supports mechanics performing work on vehicles and monitors progress; inspects completed repairs of vehicles to ensure that work was performed according to the work order and that the vehicle is running properly.

3. Coordinates and determines work on various vehicles from multiple departments; performs vehicle repair tasks requiring advanced mechanical knowledge and skills; trains and educates lower-level mechanics and technicians on repair tactics and skills.

4. Diagnoses electronic engine control systems and interprets serial data; performs road calls on complicated vehicle breakdowns and problems, provides diagnosis in the field, and monitors safety.

5. Performs State safety and emissions testing; performs other state inspections to ensure annual registrations are obtained and current.

6. Prepares and submits itemized work orders to supervisor based on diagnosis of vehicle problem; drafts, creates, and opens work orders, responds to customer inquiries, and ensures the completion of work orders once the work is done.

7. Acts as shift supervisor as required and owns a complete set of maintenance automotive hand tools.

8. Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

9.  Performs state mandated inspections to ensures appropriate work is completed.

Knowledge and Skills

1. Expert knowledge of automotive vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.

2. Thorough knowledge of advanced diagnostic techniques.

3. Ability to perform complicated automotive repairs.

4. Ability to diagnose electronic engine control systems.

5. Ability to interpret serial data.

6. Ability to use electronic scanners.

7. Ability to inspect and evaluate mechanical work and maintenance activities.

8. Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

9. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

10. Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: 

  • High school diploma or GED. 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Six (6) years of experience in automotive repair.

EQUIVALENCY: 

  • An associate's degree in automotive technology plus four (4) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements. 

LICENSES and CERTIFICATIONS: 

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.

  • Three (3) current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in automotive and/or medium heavy trucks.

  • Master Automotive Technician OR a Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician ASE certification must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.

  • Must obtain a Texas Class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) within probationary period.

  • Must obtain a Texas State Safety and Emission Testing Certification within probationary period. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Must provide own set of mechanics' hand tools. 



Salary Range

 

$58,801.60 - $70,574.40
