POSITION TITLE:
Teacher of the Visually Impaired – District-Wide
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides specialized instruction and support to students with blindness or
low vision across educational settings. This role ensures access to academic content, promotes independence, and
supports development of skills aligned with each student's individualized needs. The TVI works with students in
general education classrooms, resource settings, and other environments, focusing on areas such as concept
development, pre-braille and braille literacy, visual efficiency, and compensatory skills within the Expanded Core
Curriculum (ECC). The TVI collaborates closely with classroom teachers, families, and related service providers to
implement IEPs and create accessible, inclusive learning experiences.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Deliver individualized instruction in areas such as braille literacy, assistive technology, concept development,
and visual efficiency based on IEP goals
• Conduct and interpret functional vision and learning media assessments to guide instruction and
accommodations
• Adapt and prepare accessible instructional materials in coordination with classroom teachers
• Support classroom instruction by recommending environmental modifications and instructional strategies
• Collaborate with related service providers (e.g., orientation and mobility specialists, SLPs, OTs) to support
student access and success
• Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals using data-informed practices
• Provide consultation and training for staff on accessibility, instructional accommodations, and inclusive
practices for students with visual impairments
• Engage and support families in understanding and addressing their child’s vision-related needs
• Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility determinations, and multidisciplinary team planning
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Valid Washington State teaching certificate with Special Education or Teacher of the Visually Impaired
endorsement
• Certification or endorsement in Orientation and Mobility (ACVREP or equivalent) – preferred
• Experience working with students who have visual impairments, including those with multiple disabilities
• Proficiency in braille and tactile learning strategies; ability to teach braille reading/writing and pre-braille
skills
• Knowledge of early literacy, concept development, and learning media for students with vision loss
• Familiarity with assistive technology and accessible materials (e.g., screen readers, braille devices, tactile
graphics, large print)
• Understanding of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) and its application to academic and functional
instruction
• Skill in conducting functional vision assessments and learning media assessments

• Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills
• Must possess and maintain valid First Aid/CPR certification
