Job Description

We are seeking a Laboratory Manager to oversee our assay & sampling laboratory and work with production in evaluating new materials for processing, offer advice and help developing new methodology in both the lab and the production floor for PGM recovery, and directly work with senior management to help reduce costs, improve worker safety, and expedite material processing.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the precise testing of precious metals, including titration, ICP, XRF, fire assay and other assorted digestions and molten salt fusions
  • Oversee the processing, receiving, distribution, processing, and safe storage of test samples according to company policy
  • Provide operational input based on results obtained from samples evaluations
  • Manage and train lab technicians/chemists
  • Create and optimize methods & processes within the company, such as pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, electrochemistry, for the recovery and refining of precious metals from spent catalysts, production scrap, electronics, ores, and other reclaim operations
  • Record & report test results and ability to discuss and answer any questions regarding the results with customers and internal parties
  • Maintain, clean, oversee laboratory equipment, order chemicals & consumables, schedule maintenance and repairs
  • Perform other related duties as needed or assigned

Requirements

  • B.S. in Chemistry or 5 years in laboratory management
  • Detail oriented
  • Knowledge of inorganic testing methodology including ICP, XRF, and fire assay. PGM experience preferred
  • Ability to troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database software
  • Good communicator: Customer, Vendors, Staff, and other department Managers
  • Metallurgy knowledge a plus
  • Ability to give phone support to offsite staff/management

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to wear personal protective gear most of the day
  • Must have the ability wear a respirator and to pass a yearly PFT test
  • Must be able to see and respond to dangerous situations
  • Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 50 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs, and work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment
  • Must be able to respond quickly to sounds
  • Must be able to work in cold/hot environments and on concrete floors
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position

Working Conditions

  • The worker is required to wear PPE according to company policy & directives
  • The worker may be subjected to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system: Fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, or poor ventilation
  • The worker may be exposed to lead (Pb) , and if so, required to enroll in the company lead testing program
  • The worker may be required to function in narrow aisles or passageways
  • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside
