The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan is seeking responsible, energetic, and youth-centered individuals to serve as Summer Camp Counselors. In this role, you will support the safety, well-being, and development of youth while creating a fun, engaging, and inclusive camp experience.
Camp Counselors lead recreational, educational, and enrichment activities while building strong relationships with youth and fostering a positive, team-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
Youth Supervision & Safety
- Provide active supervision of campers at all times, ensuring a safe and structured environment.
- Enforce camp rules, expectations, and behavior standards in alignment with BGCSM policies.
- Monitor youth well-being and respond appropriately to behavioral, emotional, or safety concerns.
- Follow all safety procedures, including incident reporting and mandated reporting requirements.
Program & Activity Facilitation
- Plan, organize, and lead daily activities including sports, arts & crafts, STEM, team-building, outdoor recreation, and enrichment programming.
- Adapt activities to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of diverse youth participants.
- Maintain high energy and engagement while creating a fun and structured environment.
Youth Development & Engagement
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating leadership, professionalism, and respect.
- Build supportive relationships with campers that promote confidence, teamwork, and personal growth.
- Encourage participation and help youth develop social, emotional, and leadership skills.
Environment & Operations Support
- Assist with daily setup, breakdown, and organization of camp spaces and materials.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized program areas.
- Support transitions between activities and ensure smooth daily operations.
Communication & Documentation
- Document incidents, behavioral concerns, and notable camper progress as required.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and families when appropriate.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and daily briefings.
Emergency Response & First Aid
- Administer basic first aid as needed and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Follow established emergency protocols for injuries, illness, or behavioral situations.
Qualifications
- Experience working with youth in camps, schools, after-school programs, or recreational settings preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead and engage groups of children in a positive and structured manner.
- Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate effectively with staff.
- Patient, dependable, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
- CPR/First Aid Certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekends.
- Ability to participate in physical activities and work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
