About the Department
Coaches/instructs members in the sport of indoor rock climbing at Apex Park and Recreation District:

• Responsible for teaching climbing classes on a weekly basis.
• Demonstrates, instructs, and actively supervises participants during lessons, classes, activities and events.
• Responsible for assisting and supporting the Rock Wall Lead as well as the Recreation Coordinator.
• Maintains a safe and secure environment for all participants.
• Accountable for whereabouts of members at all times.
• Uses appropriate disciplinary techniques with participants and logs all incidents.
• Accurately keeps daily attendance and maintains necessary records.
• Other responsibilities include general maintenance of the climbing wall and auto belays.
• Effectively interacts and communicates with parents, supervisor, co-workers and participants.
• Accounts for and maintains all supplies and equipment.
• Must be able to remain composed in emergency situations and make sound judgment decisions during emergency and non-emergency situations.
• Reports directly to Recreation Coordinator.
• Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Position Duties
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be able to provide excellent guest service to participants in the program, as well as to members and guests of Apex Park and Recreation.
- Ability to communicate effectively when enforcing policies, rules and regulations.
- Must have knowledge of various sports including rules, skills, concepts, and game play.
- Knowledge of developing sportsmanship.
- Ability to work with parents.
- Ability to manage time.
- Ability to speak/write/understand English.
- Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned area and make judgments related to safety.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Clean and neat appearance.
- Effective interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills.
- Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS - in addition to the required minimum qualifications:
- 1-2 years previous rock-climbing experience.
- Knowledge of basic knots, ability to build a safe anchor, advanced understanding of climbing techniques.
- Experience working with children 5 years and older.
- Available to work the entire class duration dates/time.
- Knowledge of sports and coaching/teaching.
- Current Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED and First Aid certifications.
- Knowledge of injury prevention and treatment.
- Knowledge of principles for teaching sports skills.
- Knowledge of organizing practices.
- Knowledge of warm-up and physical conditioning.
Minimum Qualifications
No specific education requirement. All levels welcome.

WORKING CONDITIONS – Required Physical and Mental Effort and Environmental Conditions:
- Noise levels range from moderate to loud, often due to active children, group interactions, or busy transportation settings.
- Must have sufficient strength, agility, stamina, and flexibility to lift, carry or move a variety of objects up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work while crouching, kneeling, bending, stooping, or assisting children for long periods of time.
- Must have sufficient hearing to be able to hear and discriminate differing sounds in a variety of situations.
- Sufficient vision to be able to discriminate between colors, size, and type of objects and people, both close and distant.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to maintain balance and coordination while assisting with physical activities or working on uneven terrain.
