APPLICATIONS ENGINEER

 

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the planning, design, development, programming and installation of machinery and equipment within the machining facilities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Draft design concepts for Automation. Machining fixture detail design (CAD design Auto-Cad drawing and Inventor modeling capabilities).
  • Develop, build and implement controls packages (PLC, Robot, HMI) for new processes
  • Design and build of fixtures, EOAT, robot stands and dedicated machines
  • Support Integration of new and re-deployed/equipment.
  • Provide technical expertise as required to troubleshoot and debug robotic systems.
    • Highly skilled at manipulating 6-axis robots using the teach pendant.
    • Independently teach and modify program positions and functions.
    • Thorough understanding of user frames and tool frames.
    • Install and program peripheral support equipment to work in conjunction with cycle sequence of die casting machines.
    • Create and modify Fanuc robot TP run programs.
    • Create and modify Fanuc Robot background logic programs.
    • Configure I/O interfaces and devices between the peripherals of the cell.
    • Reference positions, frames, and position path creation.
    • Fanuc DCS safety zone, work zone creation, and manipulation.
  • Support new program launches, including process development, product design, testing, and corrective actions.
  • Core programming and modification to existing leak test programs, vision systems, PLC controllers, HMI interfaces and CNC programs
  • Train and assist in the development of new and existing Operations team members.
  • Assist and support continuous improvement efforts to reduce scrap, increase uptime, and decrease cycle time.
  • Assist with root cause analysis for failures and development/implementation of permanent corrective actions via root cause analysis.  Often champion corrective/preventive actions using formal methodologies (i.e. 8-D, Shanin, Six Sigma, Critical Thinking, 5-Why principles).
  • Build and install electrical cabinets and the associated machine control wiring for robotics and other peripheral equipment for automation integration projects.
  • Create new and modify existing electrical drawings using AutoCAD software.
  • Ensure technical information is distributed to maintenance and operations as required to support new installations, upgrades, or modifications.
  • Ensure new installations and programming or equipment modifications perform as expected and are completed within the required schedule.
  • Read and interpret customer part blueprints for CNC programming purposes.
  • Review production parts and tooling updates, program changes and new programs.
  • Programmer for CNC Machine’s 3Axis/4Axis/5thAxis/Lathes/Fanuc
  • Robot programming/PLC programming/Vision programming.
  • Support Tool Designer with application and processing information.
  • Interface with high (480V) and low voltage (<50V) as needed.
  • Travels to customer and equipment vendor sites as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management. 
  • Works any shift and weekends as required.
  • Meets all physical and environmental requirements.
  • Follows all prescribed safety regulations including the proper use of all required personal protective equipment.
  • Follows all Environmental Policy and Quality Policy guidelines.
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition according to established Gibbs 7-S Guidelines.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following:

Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Associate’s degree, preferred.  

Experience: Two years programming six axis robots and CNC controllers    

Computer Skills: Proficient with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, AutoCAD and Inventor

Travel:            _X_10% or less              ____11%-50%                  ____51% or more
