LOCATION: SAMUEL MAHELONA MEM HOSP | Meals on Wheels

JOB DUTIES: These are regional positions located in the Meals on Wheels (MOW) department of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region encompasses Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua’i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities.

In collaboration with the Nutritional Services department, the MOW department provides essential nutrition and companionship to homebound individuals by delivering freshly prepared meals directly to their residences. This department actively assesses the dietary needs of clients, ensuring that meals are tailored to meet specific health requirements. In addition to meal delivery, the program fosters community engagement, playing a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for recipients through regular social interactions. The initiative collaborates with local organizations to promote food security and raise awareness about the importance of nutrition among vulnerable populations.

The reliable, customer-focused Transport Meal Deliverer (TMD) assembles, packages, and delivers meals and food item supplies to homebound customers’ homes in a safe and timely manner. The meal delivery service includes a brief environmental wellness check and distribution of program or nutrition information. The TMD practices safety while on delivery routes and obeys all relevant posted traffic signs and rules. Additionally, the TMD builds positive, meaningful rapport with customers and performs any other duties as assigned. This position may require flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and evenings, as assigned based on operational needs.

This position will report directly to the Cook III (Catering Services Supervisor), position number 59868, or their designee.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE:  Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.

LICENSURE: A valid driver’s license with a clean traffic abstract is required.

EXPERIENCE: Prior experience in customer service or delivery-related roles; experience working with geriatric and/or disabled populations is preferred.

DESIRED SKILLS: 

  • KNOWLEDGE OF: Familiarity with local roads and neighborhoods; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong time management and organizational skills.
  • ABILITY TO: Perform heavy lifting, moving, and carrying; work independently and complete all job assignments daily; walk multiple miles within a shift while pulling and/or carrying food items to home delivery customers; stand; walk; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.

CRIMINAL/BACKGROUND, CREDENTIALING CHECKS: Applicable checks will be conducted periodically, and any associated costs may be borne by the applicant. Applicable checks may include, but are not limited to, state and federal criminal history records, child abuse and neglect registry check, adult protective services registry and sex offender registry records, etc.  If a job offer is made or employment is begun prior to completion of all applicable checks, any offer of employment or continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory return of all required checks.

Administrative Review, subsequent appeals: If you do not agree with a decision made by the Employment Office as to your non-qualification or non-selection for a position, you may complete a Request for Administrative Review form (available on the HHSC website) or you may submit a written request within twenty (20) days from the date of your sent notice to the Regional Chief Executive Officer/Designee. Your letter requesting the Administrative Review must include: 1) The job title(s) and recruitment number(s), 2) the specific reason(s) you are requesting the review noting if there is statute or rule violation, and 3) any additional information you want to submit to substantiate your request. If you do not submit your request within the twenty (20) days deadline, no Administrative Review will be conducted. Since the Administrative Review is a prerequisite to subsequent steps, failure to utilize this process will make you ineligible for subsequent appeals. The administrative review, formal complaint and/or appeals hearing will not necessarily postpone the recruitment process and/or rescind a selection. If you do not agree with the Administrative Review, you may file a Formal Compliant and then, if you are still not satisfied, you can appeal to the HHSC Merit Appeals Board.
