Job Description

Position Summary:


The Senior Investment Analyst will work closely with the Chief of Investments and Chief Financial Officer on all facets of managing The Chicago Community Trust’s $7 billion investment portfolio. The Senior Investment Analyst position includes both operational and investment analysis responsibilities, with an emphasis on the latter.


Position Responsibilities:



  • Operate as an integral member of the Finance team by supporting the Chief of Investments in setting the strategic direction of the Trust’s investment portfolios and overseeing the effective implementation of our investment objectives.

  • Professionally represent the Trust and serve as a subject matter expert to a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, including Trust colleagues, donors, and external partners

  • Support investment committee and board governance by preparing meeting materials, coordinating agendas, documenting deliberations and decisions, and ensuring compliance with applicable policies and fiduciary standards.

  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Chief of Investments.

  • Adapt responsibilities as portfolio strategy and organizational needs evolve, in collaboration with Chief of Investments.


Investment Management and Analysis



  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of existing and prospective investments; monitor performance, risk exposures, and news flow. Develop a system for monitoring areas of concern and interact with investment managers to understand performance trends; share insights with senior leadership and board committee(s). Recommend investment changes or suggest new investments, as appropriate.

  • Assist with investment manager sourcing, due diligence, and selection; determine top prospective investments for Trust portfolios.

  • Actively monitor the marketplace for major developments affecting investments held in the Trust’s portfolios; communicate any notable trends to Trust staff.

  • Support ongoing assessment of portfolio-level risks, including liquidity, concentration, operational, and manager risks.

  • Analyze data generated from various databases and lead the preparation, editing and organization of materials for meetings. Prepare investment performance commentary for our donors and philanthropic services team.

  • Assist with due diligence for new financial advisory firm relationships and set investment strategy constraints to reflect an assessment of firm resources, where appropriate. Collaborate with donors’ financial advisors to develop custom investment strategies for donor-advised funds; direct the opening of new accounts in a streamlined, customer-service-oriented manner.

  • Work collaboratively with the Trust’s Director of Impact Investments and Community Impact team to determine opportunities for alignment of the Trust’s investment portfolio with our grant-making. Support development of a pipeline of new impact investment opportunities for Trust portfolios and for donor-advised funds, and assist with impact investment due diligence.


Data Management & Reporting



  • Support the Controller and Senior Manager of Investment Accounting on investment-related inquiries, including support of our annual audit

  • Serve as a key point of coordination between internal teams and external data or systems providers.

  • Ensure accurate accounting of all security holdings, performance, and exposure information from external investment managers.

  • Investigate any discrepancies uncovered during the reconciliation of investment assets; work with accounting team and external data provider to correct any issues and develop process workflows to proactively address for future periods.

  • Manage investment data and related communication with our investment consultant for performance reporting purposes.


Investment Operations



  • Collaborate with external partners, including investment consultant and advisors, to plan and implement all necessary investment transactions in Trust portfolios.

  • Direct transactions related to Trust investment portfolios; supervise and review transaction activity. Prepare and submit required paperwork for subscription and redemption activity, as well as the completion of regulatory filings and audit requirements.

  • Lead the operational process to facilitate donor-recommended investments into new impact investment opportunities.

  • Generate, organize, and maintain electronic records to ensure institutional memory.


Other



  • Direct and supervise the work of the Trust’s investment intern(s).


 


 

Position Qualifications:



  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or business

  • Preference for candidates pursuing the CFA designation, an MBA, or other advanced business degree.

  • 5 years of experience working in the investment management or financial services industry; prior experience with an endowment, foundation, or family office is preferred.

  • Strong investments acumen, across asset classes, with the ability to apply knowledge to business facts and circumstances.

  • Interest in impact investing, and comfort working at the intersection of financial and charitable objectives.

  • Excellent project management, organizational, and planning skills with proven ability to manage competing priorities and execute deliverables in a timely fashion.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively resolve issues of a complex nature.

  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external business partners.

  • Very strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
