Job Description

About the Department

Under general direction, performs routine traffic safety work.  Assists children in safely crossing roads.  Takes control of intersections and roadways to direct traffic in a safe and efficient manner.  Operation of school zone signals. 

This position can be located at any school location in Madison County 
The Supplemental Questions on the job application are deemed necessary for the job. 

Position Duties

(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)

  • Assists children in safely crossing roadways. 
  • Monitors and prevents any behavior which might jeopardize safety. 
  • Responds to other needs as required.
  • Takes control of roadway and/or intersection and directs traffic in a safe and efficient manner. 
  • Monitors drivers and reports any unsafe behavior.
  • Attends and conducts daytime training sessions as required. 
  • Training of new crossing guards as they are hired.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to Graduation from standard senior high school or possession of a GED.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Thorough knowledge of roadways and geography of the area surrounding the location of the assigned school. 
  • Skill to communicate effectively with children, parents, and citizens. 
  • Ability to learn traffic signals and safe direction and assistance methods.

Other Qualifications

Physical Requirements 
  • Ability to perform work in adverse weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to see well enough to operate an automobile, and to recognize vehicles and pedestrians approaching the roadway. 
  • Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with children, parents, etc., and to recognize vehicles approaching the school zone in enough time to respond. 
  • Must have the physical stamina to stand for up to 2.5 hours at a time directing traffic and assisting children.
Certifications or Licenses Required
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and have access to reliable transportation. 
  • Must be available to attend daytime training sessions.
  • Must be able to pass a physical exam, drug screen, and criminal background check.
