Synopsis

The Truss Engineer (Licensed) works in partnership with clients, component manufacturers, and internal teams to lead the design, engineering, and delivery of roof and floor truss systems for residential and commercial projects. This role combines hands-on truss design and engineering with leadership responsibilities, including managing design workflows, supporting team performance, and ensuring all projects meet client expectations, company standards, and applicable codes. The Truss Engineer is responsible for reviewing and sealing engineered truss designs, resolving complex design challenges, and driving quality, efficiency, and accountability across the team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and engineering of residential and commercial roof and floor truss systems using truss software.
  • Review, approve, and seal truss engineering designs and calculations in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Manage and prioritize team workload to meet daily, weekly, and project-related production goals.
  • Provide technical guidance to truss designers to resolve complex design conditions and discrepancies.
  • Interpret architectural and structural plans to determine appropriate truss design specifications.
  • Optimize truss designs for material efficiency, constructability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Communicate with clients, architects, and engineers to clarify design requirements and resolve issues.
  • Support field teams in resolving job site design and engineering challenges.
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, and permit review responses.
  • Maintain job files in accordance with Fieldstone file structure and standards.
  • Ensure all work complies with Fieldstone QA/QC procedures and client-specific requirements.
  • Mentor and support team members to improve performance, efficiency, and technical capability.
  • Participate in team meetings to address coordination, scheduling, and technical concerns.
  • Identify process improvements to enhance team productivity and quality of deliverables.
  • Take ownership of engineering quality and overall project success.

 

Required Knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of wood truss systems, components, and connector applications.
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering principles including load paths, tributary areas, and load transfer.
  • Knowledge of residential and commercial construction methods and practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, and construction documents.
  • Working knowledge of building codes and standards related to truss design and structural systems.
  • Familiarity with truss design software and CAD-based drafting environments.
  • Understanding of engineering analysis, reports, and construction documentation.
  • Knowledge of QA/QC processes and production-based workflows.

Required Experience

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required.
  • 5+ years of experience in truss design, structural engineering, or related field.
  • Experience reviewing and approving structural or truss designs preferred.
  • Prior experience leading, mentoring, or supporting a design team preferred.
  • Experience with residential and/or commercial truss systems.
  • Familiarity with component design applications and engineering software.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering preferred.
