Job Description

Veterinary Technician/Assistant

Seasonal Schedule: Up to 28 hours/week; days and hours vary

Skilled, steady, and quick-thinking-someone who can handle high-volume medical work while staying calm in critical moments with love for animals.

What You'll Do

You'll play a key role in the shelter's medical teams supporting exams, surgery, and treatment while helping ensure animals receive safe, timely, and compassionate care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with exams, surgery, anesthesia, and post-procedure monitoring
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and calculate accurate dosages
  • Triage incoming animals and assess medical needs and behavior
  • Perform lab work, radiographs, and basic diagnostic procedures
  • Maintain sterile environments, disinfect equipment, and document care in shelter systems

What You Bring – Education & Experience

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology or related field OR
  • One year of hands-on experience in animal care, vet clinics, or similar setting
  • Ability to safely handle and restrain animals of varying temperaments
  • Strong multitasking skills in a fast-paced, high-volume environment

Preferred Certifications

  • Fear Free Shelter Certification (required within 30 days of hire)
  • Rabies and tetanus vaccinations (required within 1 year)

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of anesthesia, intubation, and patient monitoring
  • Experience with lab equipment and diagnostic procedures
  • Understanding of animal behavior, medical terminology, and treatment protocols
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and manage controlled substances
