Summer Day Camp Program Leader

Part-Time, Temporary

The Armed Services YMCA Hawaii hosts 9 weeks of action-packed educational and recreational camps for children ages 5-12, and we are seeking energetic, accountable Summer Program Counselors to provide a safe and memorable experience for our campers. The Summer Program Counselor will be responsible for creating memories and fostering hopes and dreams for an assigned group of 18-20 children. Duties include helping plan, facilitate, lead, and participate in all group activities. Applicants should be patient, fun-loving and confident in their ability to motivate and assist children in everything from learning new skills to reinforcing positive behaviors in character development. Schedule:
Mandatory (paid) training and program prep: 5/26/26 through 5/29/26 (8:00am-3:00pm) Summer Program Camp Dates: 6/1/26 through 7/31/26

Locations:
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam area
Schofield Barracks/Wheeler Army Airfield area
Marine Corps Base Hawaii
*Must be able to work at all 3 locations, as scheduled
**Must be eligible to access military installations

Shifts: Monday through Friday, 7:30am-1:30pm

Compensation: $19.00 per hour

Employment type: Part-time (Seasonal)

Selected candidates will require a background check prior to hire.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Implement weekly schedule for assigned group.
  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each day. Activities may include cheers, crafts, games, STEAM projects, games, sports, etc.
  • Identify and respond to potential behavioral issues.
  • Ensure site is clean, organized, and free of litter.
  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to program leadership.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including, incident reports and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand emergency procedures associated with the program.
  • Know, enforce, and follow safety guidelines associated with the program.
  • Attend all in-service trainings.

Qualifications (Required):
  • Upon hire, completion of online training program and obtain 1st Aid/CPR certification.
  • Education classes or experience in youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field.
  • Ability to lead, plan, organize and implement program activities.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

Work Conditions:
  • Must be able to work at all three different camp locations, as scheduled.
  • Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in activities which include, but are not limited to team building initiatives, physical games, and activities.
  • Must be capable of carrying loads of up to 70 pounds and able to traverse uneven terrain without undue exertion.
  • Work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
  • Perform essential program support to activities and programs which may include, but not limited to the following activities: semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, shoveling, waist, shoulders and legs and lying on stomach and/or back.
  • Must have the ability to physically manage and support children when needed for safety in general camp activities (child weighing up to 150 pounds).
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks outdoors in warm climate.
  • Remain alert at all times.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
