Secondary Choir Teacher (6-12)

Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the junior/senior high school principal, the teacher will be working with 6th-12th grade students to launch a vocal music program with the desire for this person to be involved with or leading a renewed drama program. The position emphasizes building a vocal music program and inspiring engagement with the performing arts within our school community.
Qualifications:
Required:
Minimum of BS/BA degree in Music Education (K-12), additional secondary teaching certifications preferred, but not required
- Possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in Music (JX/JQ)
- Able to assess and document student progress
- Professional in personal conduct and actions
- Strong organizational, classroom management, collaboration and communication skills
- Demonstrated competence in the use of technology
- Active and continuous learner in the area of secondary education, research-based instructional strategies, and supporting the “whole child” at the secondary-level.
Desired Characteristics:
- Experience in working with students in grades 6-12
- Familiarity and/or experience with Professional Learning Communities and leveraging classroom-level data to shape target instruction
- Experience and/or familiarity with use of PBIS to acknowledge and promote positive behavior and behavior expectations
- Experience using technology as an instructional tool and for monitoring student progress
- Knowledge in Google Apps for Education and other web-based educational applications
- Knowledge in internet search engines, Google Docs and other internet based applications
- Understanding, experience with, and/or willingness to adhere to Standards Based Grading (SBG) and assessing
- Take a leadership role within the staff to demonstrate effective pedagogical and curricular approaches applicable to colleagues across other departments and grade-levels
- Innovative in communication efforts with students, parents, and District personnel
- Vision for developing, supporting, and growing a K-12 vocal music program
- Ability to work with various personality types and dedication to the success of all students
- Experience or interest in Drama and/or Theatre
Position Responsibilities:
Provide vocal music instruction to students in grades 6-12
- Maintain and continue to grow the middle and high school Vocal Music programs
- Teach music techniques including, but not limited to: balance, blend, timing, intonation, expression, phrasing and technique
- Provide and maintain an orderly classroom environment, based on establishing a strong relationships with all students
- Facilitate music concerts for middle and high school students
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive environment
- Communicate regularly with building administrator, classroom teachers, K-12 music colleagues, and parents on student progress and event planning
- Evaluate each student’s performance and growth and prepare progress reports
- Work independently and cooperatively using a variety of instructional strategies
- Ability to plan and organize instructional, performance, and public events
- Successful teaching/coaching of students preferred
- Perform other duties as assigned by administration
