Position ~ Special Education Paraeducator

Days/Hours:

Work days align with the DCS Student Calendar. 

6.75 hours per day (subject to change) with an unpaid 35-minute lunch period.

Compensation:  

$17.44 per hour 

* Paid Leave Days

* Pension plan through Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System (MPSERS)

* Retirement Savings Plans 403B and 457 Retirement Plans
This position does not qualify for medical benefits.

Summary:  

Working in collaboration with the instructional team, a paraeducator provides assistance with academic instruction, physical activities and life skills to students with disabilities.  The special education paraeducator assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities, help special needs students, and cares for their physical, emotional health and safety, affirming their abilities, and striving to promote self-advocacy skills.  Paraeducators are visible and vital individuals throughout the school setting.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists student(s) with disabilities according to the supports outlined in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) as it pertains to academics, behavior, related services (Speech, OT/PT, etc.), and physical hygiene.
  • Assists instructional team with the development of work assignments, job responsibilities and services to student(s) with disabilities.
  • Assists the instructional team in the implementation of health care, instructional programs and the management of student behavior.
  • Maintains student confidentiality.
  • Assists in administering assessments as needed.
  • Supports the implementation of planned lessons. 
  • Manages both behavioral and instructional logs.
  • Monitors established goals and objectives for students and communicates student progress.
  • Bending, lifting and overhead work required.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality to assignment required.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with parents, students and staff.
  • Computer skills necessary.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be self-directed.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems.
  • Good attendance is important for this position and is required.

Physical Demands

The physical demands of this job include sitting, kneeling, standing, and the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
