Job Description

Description

Protects life and property by performing emergency aid duties, firefighting, and hazardous materials as well as fire prevention duties; drives the rescue, maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities; and assists in training as requested.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists in training new employees.
  • Performs emergency response activities including driving emergency response vehicles; determines location; and handles traffic control devices while providing for the safety of other vehicles, pedestrians, and fire personnel.
  • Drives rescues and other staff vehicles in emergency and non-emergency modes. (In accordance with departmental standards).
  • Efficiently operates tools and equipment on all fire apparatus.
  • Performs emergency aid as required through your Scope of Practice and Protocols for your level of EMS care.
  • Performs firefighting activities including but not limited to laying hose, and performing fire combat, search and rescue, fire containment, and other extinguishment tasks.
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
  • Receives and relays fire calls and alarms; operates radio and other communication equipment.
  • Properly collects and disposes of infectious waste generated at emergency scenes.
  • Participates in fire training drills; attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  • Trains with city and county fire companies for operational readiness.
  • Participates in daily physical fitness training.
  • Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
  • Assists in the delivery of public education programs for safety, medical, and fire prevention topics such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), basic first aid, and general emergency medical assistance awareness.
  • Participates in fire drills.
  • Participates in the inspection of buildings and other structures in fire prevention programs.
  • Completes required EMS and/or fire reports.
  • Documents emergency aid activity on proper forms as required by law and departmental standards.
  • Assists in administrative activities as requested.

 

 Other Essential Duties and Functions:

  • Maintains and operates all equipment, apparatus, and facilities; performs minor repairs to department equipment cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hoses; and washes, cleans, polishes, maintains, and tests apparatus and equipment.
  • Communicates effectively with private physicians and staff concerning patient treatment and disposition.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Completion of a recognized fire recruit training academy.
  • All fire department employees must complete all probationary requirements by the end of their first year of employment. The individual must meet the objectives listed in the probationary handbook (including equipment: familiarization, firefighter competencies, territory familiarization, dispatch familiarization, physical ability testing, and testing over our standards and our policies).

 

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid State driver’s license.
  • Proof of completion of Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention Program (EVAP) without record of suspension or revocation in any state; satisfactory driving record/motor vehicle report (MVR).
  • Certified as a Firefighter in the state of Georgia through the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council
  • National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Certified Firefighter I and II; NPQ Hazmat First Responder Operations Level
  • Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (EMTI), Emergency Medical Technician Advanced (EMTA) or Paramedic through the state of Georgia: and possess all current certifications as required through the State of Georgia to maintain your current level of EMS certification.
  • Current National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) requirements for The City of Woodstock Fire Department for your position
  • Desired completion of training in Crash Vehicle Extrication.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Pass a criminal history and background check. No felony convictions or disqualifying convictions for the past ten (10) years.
  • Pass a polygraph examination.
  • Pass a medical exam and the department’s physical agility test. Maintain the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) medical and physical fitness requirements.
  • Must meet all probationary requirements, to include demonstrating a working knowledge of the equipment, territory, and department standard operating procedures through task book completion, verbal, and oral testing.
  • Meet the minimum training requirements for the previous 12 months.
  • Satisfactorily completed internal requirements and are checked off to drive the rescues and other staff vehicles emergency.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

  • Knowledge of driver safety.
  • Knowledge of first aid, basic life support, and resuscitation techniques and their application in accordance with your level of EMS training
  • Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Skill in operating the rescue, all equipment from fire apparatus to include, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, first aid equipment, radio, pager, personal computer, and phone.
  • Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate emergency medical equipment that is applicable to your level of care or below.
  • Ability to apply standard firefighting and emergency aid techniques to specific situations.
  • Ability to act effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical efforts during emergency or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke.
  • Ability to read and write the English language.

 

Physical Demands:

The work is very heavy work and requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:   balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

 

Work Environment:

Work is performed regularly outdoors. Outdoor settings can involve exposure to extreme temperatures; a variety of weather conditions; contaminated surroundings; noise; contagious diseases; moving mechanical parts; high and or precarious places; cramped surroundings, poor lighting/limited visibility; possible structural instability; electrical hazards;  vibrations; poor air quality; falling objects; and various atmospheric conditions (smoke, fumes, odors, gases, alarms, dirt, dust, water, toxic and noxious chemicals, solvents, oils, and airborne particles).  In situations of emergencies, work may involve exposure to chaotic situations, traffic, and handling tragic situations involving injuries, death, and emotionally charged reactions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.
