Job Description

Department: Administration
Division: Convention & Visitors Bureau/Choose Newton
Reports to: Convention and Visitors Bureau Coordinator
Grade: 85
FLSA: Non-Exempt (hourly); 10-20 hours per week

Position Summary

The City of Newton is seeking a limited-term intern to create high-quality multimedia marketing content to promote our community and public services and help tell our story. You’ll work closely with City Convention & Visitors Bureau staff to develop creative ideas for communicating the City’s priority messages in a visual way and to plan and produce content for social media and other uses. 

Examples of Work

  • Create and edit high-quality short-form video content that effectively supports the Choose Newton Strategic Marketing Plan and/or communicates the services and successes of the City of Newton. 
  • Updating the Choose Newton website.
  • Assisting in crafting the Choose Newton newsletter. 
  • Take publication-quality photos for social media, print publications or distribution to appropriate outlets as needed.
  • Assist in creating static graphic design content, applying visual design best practice principles and maintaining City branding/graphics standards.
  • Assist with storytelling to inform, entertain and engage Newton residents and visitors.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of social media trends and best practices, specifically Facebook and Instagram. 
  • Manage projects from start to finish, including planning, production, and editing.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team and other staff and communicate effectively with stakeholders. 
  • Other related duties as assigned. 

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduate.
  • Some experience and at least the start of a portfolio of video, photography and/or graphic design work.
  • Organized, self-motivated, ability to multi-task, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Enthusiastic, friendly, and excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation and a cell phone.

 
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills with ability to work across the department with many different teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Critical thinker and problem solver. 
  • Experience with Canva, Adobe Premiere Pro, and other Creative Suite programs.

Supplemental Information

Must have flexible schedule with ability to work at least 75% of hours during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm). This position will average 10 hours per week.
