Job Description

About the Department

This position is advertised from the minimum to the mid-point hourly rate. Salary will be determined based on education and experience at the time of offer. 

NATURE OF WORK 

Under limited supervision, performs technical work of moderate difficulty in installing, testing, monitoring, maintaining, and repairing security systems hardware and software and fire alarm systems. This position has countywide responsibilities.

Position Duties

(Illustrative Only) Manages technical aspects of design, installation, functionality and repair of electronic communications, surveillance, security and access control systems; manages technical aspects of design, installation, functionality and repair Fire Systems; designs, seeks bids, and makes recommendations for purchases of new security and fire safety equipment; determines, evaluates and makes recommendations regarding security system requirements and modifications to existing security systems and new construction projects; supervises, trains, and evaluates the work of subordinates and disciplinary process; participates in interviewing and selecting new employees; assists the Director with the coordination and direction of all functions of work; supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in installation, testing, and maintenance of security and fire safety equipment; analyzes and resolves performance problems involving security systems and fire safety equipment; notifies users of systems problems, initiates corrective action, and performs follow up to ensure proper resolution; develops hardware and software requirements and modifies system configurations based on user requirements and fabricates electronics devices for special installations; creates technical support procedures and practices for users; creates technical support procedures and practices for users; conducts equipment training and provides customer assistance on access control and security systems; works with vendors, contractors, and technical support staff to ensure efficiency and performance of security systems; installs, checks, monitors, maintains, replaces and repairs electronic security systems including state-of-the-art surveillance camera network, alarm panels, and intercom panels; responsible for monitoring the Fire/Security System budget; serves as a liaison between the department and other entities; when directed, attend meetings with County leaders on behalf of the Director; identifies and recommends methods to improve management and operations of the Fire & Security Systems for the County involving enhanced work processes, responsiveness, efficient use of resources and quality service delivery; works cooperatively with individual departments in identifying and analyzing requirements and problems; gathers, compiles, and analyzes activity reports to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of fire & security systems; observes changes in clarity of video monitors, and makes necessary adjustments; acts as liaison in the absence of the Director/Operations Manager; makes on-call emergency services after normal business hours, as needed; regular and reliable attendance is required;

performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s Degree in Electronics, Electrical, Engineering, Industrial Security or related field and four (4) years of experience in industrial electronic security work, including two (2) years of supervisory experience and one (1) year of project management experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license; County: Requires successful completion of a background check.; Sheriffs Must successfully pass a background check to the satisfaction of the Yuma County Sheriff’s Department; special recommendations: Certified Fiber Optics Installer.

Knowledge of Yuma County organization, operations, policies and procedures;surveillance cameras, alarms, intercoms, , and electronics systems;of security systems procedures and access controls;fiber optic installation;video surveillance management systems;most up to date security systems and their capabilities;correctional facilities access control and surveillance fundamentals;access control systems;commercial fire safety code, policies, and procedures.


Skill in designing effective electronics security systems;determining the security needs of a department;the operation of security equipment such as magnetometers, x-ray machines, remote-controllable hidden cameras, video robotics, hand-held metal detectors, and custom surveillance equipment;reading blueprints, schematics, operating manuals, technical specifications and drawings;the use of electronic test equipment such as logic meter, and digital pulsar;training and supervising others;analyzing situations and determining appropriate actions;following written and verbal instructions.


Ability to lift 30 or more pounds; work outdoors in varying weather conditions; follow written and verbal instructions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; research and write detailed reports; read, write, and synthesize data and reports; use modern office equipment and computers; assigning and leading the work of others; planning and organizing work; select, train and supervise staff; develop, evaluate and analyze operational policies and procedures; react to the diversity of various county agencies; work well with people of varied socio-economic backgrounds; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; speak effectively to large groups and public bodies; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public; perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without a reasonable accommodation

Work Environment: 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. Generally the job requires 30% bending, 20% walking, 20% stooping and 30% standing. Working at a computer monitor for extended periods may be required.  The job is performed under varying extreme weather conditions and may be exposed to hazardous materials. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to thirty (30) or more pounds.  This position requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far, vision, and depth perception. May work extended hours outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
