POSITION PURPOSE:
Under the supervision of the Clinic Supervisor or Dental Manager, the Dental Hygienist performs within the Oregon Board of Dentistry’s scope of practice for Dental Hygiene; maintains records of treatment; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains proper infection control procedures; wears required personal protection equipment per OSHA standards.
- Communicates with dental front office staff to coordinate and schedule patient appointments appropriately.
- Prepares room and instruments prior to seating patient.
- Prepares patients for treatment by seating, taking blood pressures, and reviewing medical history; presents and witnesses signatures on all appropriate consent forms.
- Accurately and efficiently documents by charting each patient’s oral health, treatment plan and chart notes and ensures that consent forms are fully signed.
- Produces all x-rays as prescribed by the dentist.
- Provides thorough and gentle prophylaxis, full mouth debridement, and scaling, root planning to patients.
- Provides topical fluoride applications and sealants for designated patients.
- Administers anesthetic for hygiene and dentist, if needed.
- Provides patient education sessions and materials to patients.
- Checks, sends, and addresses patient recall cards.
- Addresses patient needs and concerns and works to overcome the patient’s anxiety. Informs and discusses cleaning options with patients.
- Maintains dental hygiene equipment and assures that equipment is operating properly and safely; reports any mechanical issues or potential need for maintenance to supervisor.
- Provides excellent customer service and treats customers in a dignified manner.
- Uses excellent oral and written communication skills and communicates in an easy to understand, friendly and professional manner; ensures understanding and provides additional information as needed.
- Demonstrates a high-level of initiative and problem-solving skills using sound judgement. Assumes additional responsibilities as needed, with little or no direction; shows initiative in assisting others within the department. Works with minimal supervision and demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail.
- Maintains organized work area; completes assigned tasks efficiently and in a timely manner.
- Maintains compliance with annual continuing education and BLS requirements as established by the Oregon State Board of Dental Examiners.
- Attends in-service and other required meetings.
- Adheres to any regulations, policies, and procedures established by the ADA, Oregon State Board of Dental Examiners, and Aviva Health.
- Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of a Dental Hygiene Degree program and possessing a current Dental Hygiene license by the Oregon Board of Dentistry; or license eligible is required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of dental care in outpatient setting and knowledge of the principles and practice of modern dental hygiene as related to community health.
- Ability to maintain and interpret various records relating to patient care and dental services.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to perform the following physical requirements:
- In-person work during normal clinic hours; may require traveling to assist in other clinics using company or personal vehicle.
- Remain in stationary position 50% of the day while performing clinical/administrative duties.
- Move or traverse 50% of the day throughout clinic to perform clinical/administrative duties.
- Operate equipment 75% of the day using a computer, clinical, and hygiene equipment.
- Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and accurately so others will understand; ability to interact with patients and staff clearly.
- Able to move or transport up to 25 pounds while using equipment and providing patient care.
- Typically work indoors in heat-controlled environment.
- OSHA Exposure Category – Category #1: Possible job-related exposure to blood and/or body fluids. Requires the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
