Job Description

Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for a Maintenance Technician for the Housing Maintenance department. The primary function of the Maintenance Technician is to manage general repairs and other maintenance needs for Housing & Residence Life buildings, equipment and other property and may perform lead worker duties over temporary staff including students.

Duties and Responsibilities of Position 

45%        Environmental Upkeep and Prevention

  • Monitor and maintain accurate records of assessments, reports, and follow-up actions related to healthy environment management.
  • Conduct regular inspections of residential facilities to identify early signs of mildew, mold, or moisture-related concerns.
  • Implement preventive measures and maintenance strategies to reduce humidity and ensure proper ventilation in living and common spaces.
  • Coordinate timely cleaning, remediation, or professional treatment of affected areas to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
  • Maintain Synexis air purifier units.

20%          Environmental Maintenance & Education

  • Provide information to residents and staff on moisture prevention practices and reporting procedures.
  • Collaborate with Housing Leadership and safety teams to ensure compliance with health and environmental standards and guidelines. 
  • Clean/replace filters, adjust and calibrate pumps, thermostats, and valves.

20%     Electrical

  • Install new electrical systems and components and repair existing equipment including light switches, outlets, circuit breakers, fuses, fixtures, motors, and generators
  • May perform regular examinations of fire and smoke alarms to ensure equipment remains in working order
  • Maintain and repair Honeywell and Simplex fire alarm systems

5%        Carpentry

  • Perform basic and advanced carpentry tasks as needed
  • Repair and replace ceiling and floor tiles
  • Use both rough and finish carpentry tools
  • Carry out carpentry duties including the repair of tables, chairs, benches and counters.

5%      Plumbing

  • Perform maintenance, repair, and replacement of hot and cold-water lines, low pressure steam lines, gas, air, drain lines, hot/chilled water lines, and associated fixtures and components.
  • Help maintain a working stock of parts and uses standard pluming tool

5%     Miscellaneous maintenance

  • Perform limited locksmith tasks i.e. cleaning repair, and replacement of locks and cuts and stamps I.D. number on replacement keys
  • Maintain shop equipment, tools, and materials
  • Perform limited maintenance of cabinetry and masonry
  • Repair gutters, roofs, and flashing by sealing cracks and other leaks as necessary
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned

Education and Experience - 

Required at Hire and Preferred Required Education and Experience at Hire

  • High school diploma.
  • Three years of related construction or carpentry work.

Job Type:  University Support Staff

Appointment Duration:  12 months

Work Schedule:  Full Time – Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Salary Range: grade 6, $17.66 - $23.82 hourly
