General Statement:
The K-12 Special Education Literacy Specialist is a district-based position. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Special Education and Related Services and is supported by building level administrators in the implementation of targeted direct literacy instruction in phonological processing deficits (identified by IDEA and Public Act 14-39 SLD/Dyslexia) and language arts instruction. The Special Education Literacy Support Specialist will research and implement appropriate literacy curriculums in the areas of decoding and reading comprehension, provide professional development for building based literacy teachers, participate in ongoing literacy instruction, literacy assessments and professional development. Performance evaluations will be conducted by the Assistant Director of Special Education.
CSDE Educator Certification Requirements:
- Connecticut State Department of Education Certification endorsed for Comprehensive Special Education K-12 (065).
- Connecticut State Department of Education Certification endorsed for Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts, 1-12 (102) preferred.

Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.

General Statement:
The K-12 Special Education Literacy Specialist is a district-based position. This position reports to the
Assistant Director of Special Education and Related Services and is supported by building level

Special Education Literacy Support Specialist will research and implement appropriate literacy

professional development. Performance evaluations will be conducted by the Assistant Director of
Special Education.
Major Responsibilities:
• Coordinating required professional development and product licensing for all Reading Specialists.
• Providing coaching and support for building based reading specialists on an ongoing basis with
particular emphasis on implementation of curriculum with fidelity, choosing appropriate tools and
assessments, interpreting data and reporting out for progress monitoring.
• Attending meetings with the Assistant Director of Special Education and Related Services (or
designee) as needed during the school day and/or afterschool to review IEPs, assist building based
literacy specialists with implementation of IEP goals and objectives and monitor implementation of
multisensory reading methodology.
• Working collaboratively with building and district administrators to provide consistent, high
expectations for all students identified with a reading disability.
• Continually collects, assesses, and analyzes student data consistent with requirements of IDEA and
Public Act 14-39 to monitor student progress in meeting literacy targets and evaluating the
effectiveness of literacy instruction and curriculum.
• Responsible for budgeting, ordering of materials, and management of web-based platforms.
• Overseeing and coordinating the screening process for specialized reading across the district, and
supporting building based reading specialists to create groupings to provide direction for scheduling.
• Responsible for holding team meetings on an as needed basis with Specialized Reading Data
Specialists to review data, facilitate discussions regarding implementation and progress.
• Incorporating reading comprehension as a separate component of Specialized Reading Programs,
establish duration and determine needs across buildings, as well as providing guidance and
recommendations on appropriate curriculums to implement at each level.
• Meeting with building based IEP teams to provide technical guidance regarding inclusion of
Specialized Reading on the IEP, specifically service lines and the elementary to middle school
transition

• Familiarity with national, state, and local curriculum standards and frameworks.
• Experience with planning and delivering standards based literacy instruction utilizing scientific
research based multisensory reading instruction.
• Demonstrated experience in utilizing research-based instructional strategies.
• Demonstrated experience in aligning curriculum with Connecticut Standards and the CCSS.
• Experience in writing standards-based lesson plans/goals and objectives for students with individual
educational plans (IEPs).
• Knowledge of a range of effective instructional strategies, assessment tools, and research-based "best
practices" for literacy instruction utilizing scientific research based multisensory reading programs
and methodology.
• Demonstrated ability to work well with others.
• Committed to the growth and academic development of all students.
• High standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity.
• Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook)
• Working knowledge of and/or demonstrate the ability to learn and implement Operating Systems (i.e.
Windows, Chrome); Productivity Software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
Google Workspace - Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail; Adobe Acrobat); Communication and
Collaboration tools (i.e. Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams); Accounting Software (i.e. Oracle,
QuickBooks); Student Information Systems (i.e. Naviance, Power School, CT-SEDS); or any other
technology deemed relevant for this position.
Qualifications:
• Connecticut State Department of Education Certification endorsed for Comprehensive Special
Education K-12 (065).
• Connecticut State Department of Education Certification endorsed for Remedial Reading and
Remedial Language Arts, 1-12 (102) preferred.
• Certification in multisensory reading methodology such as Orton Gillingham, or Wilson Reading
Program.
• Four (4) years of special education teaching and reading support utilizing Multisensory Teaching
Methodology.
