About the Department

DESCRIPTION: 

The Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency (ABE/HSE) Instructor position is a full-time, 12-month position located at The Carrington Scott Main Campus, Dillingham Center, or community partner site within Alamance County. Classes may include: face to face, hybrid, online, or mail in options. Under the direction of the Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency Program Coordinator, the ABE/HSE Instructor will be responsible for assisting adult learners with acquiring the academic, digital, and employment skills necessary to achieve a high school equivalency diploma and to transition to workforce development and post-secondary training opportunities. 

Position Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide evidence-based educational opportunities for adult learners with diverse educational needs
  • Assist with advising students on next possible steps and connecting to college and community resources when appropriate
  • Teach meaningful, relevant, and aligned content to students who are preparing for the final exams to earn the high school equivalency credential
  • Develop high-quality lesson plans aligned to the NCCCS College and Career Readiness Adult Education Content Standards
  • Contextualize educational opportunities to include employability and soft skills development
  • Develop proficiency in best practices related to Adult Basic Education programs and transitioning elements
  • Manage instruction with computer-based learning platforms
  • Pursue professional development and share expertise and best practices within the college, locally and at the state level, when appropriate
  • Cultivate a positive, collegial, and collaborative learning environment in the classroom
  • Demonstrate a positive and proactive approach in identifying problems, creating innovative solutions, and managing projects
  • Represent the department and college professionally at community and college events
  • Maintain required documentation and paperwork to adhere to program deadlines
  • Adhere to departmental and institutional policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator or Director of College and Career Readiness

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Ability to teach high-school level English and math concepts
  • Minimum of one year teaching experience
  • Experience developing lesson plans and integrating technology into the classroom.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs
  • Excellent follow up and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of adults

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with adult learning frameworks
  • Minimum of one year teaching adult learners
  • Experience developing ABE/HSE curriculum
Advanced degree (masters level or higher) from a regionally accredited institution

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Possession of or working towards a NCCCS-recognized College and Career Readiness teaching credential (New hires will have up to two years from hire date to complete a teaching credential)
