About the Department
Assists school children in safely crossing street intersections. Work hours are on an as-needed basis during the early morning and/or mid-afternoon, corresponding with school arrival and dismissal times, which may vary depending on the assigned school location.
Position Duties
Assist school children and pedestrians in safely crossing designated street intersections. Monitor traffic conditions and use appropriate signals to stop or direct vehicles when necessary. Ensure the safety of children entering and leaving school areas during designated crossing times. Remain alert to traffic hazards and changing roadway conditions while on duty. Perform crossing guard duties during assigned morning and/or afternoon school arrival and dismissal periods. Report safety concerns, incidents, or traffic issues to the appropriate supervisor or department.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Previous experience working with children, in traffic control, public safety, or a similar role is desirable but not required.
Other Qualifications
Must have telephone service Standing/Walking: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while monitoring and assisting children at designated crossing locations. Speaking/Talking: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with school children, pedestrians, motorists, and supervisors. Hearing: Ability to hear traffic sounds, vehicle horns, and verbal directions in an outdoor environment. Visual Acuity: Ability to observe traffic conditions, pedestrians, and potential hazards to ensure safe street crossings. Reaching/Grasping/Handling: Ability to hold and operate traffic control signs (such as a stop paddle) and perform hand signals to direct traffic. Lifting: Ability to lift and carry light equipment or materials, up to approximately 10–15 pounds. Stooping/Kneeling: Ability to bend or stoop occasionally as needed while performing duties. Mental Acuity: Ability to remain alert, exercise sound judgment, and react quickly to changing traffic conditions to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sufficient physical strength required to roll 10 lb. stop sign to middle of street as necessary.
DURING OCCASIONS OF LOCAL EMERGENCIES THIS POSITION MAY BE REQUIRED TO REPORT TO PERFORM EMERGENCY TASKS, WHICH MAY RESULT IN EXTENDED WORK HOURS AS WELL AS EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME AWAY FROM FAMILY MEMBERS.
