POSITION SUMMARY
The purpose of the Accountant classification is to maintain financial records and ensure that financial transactions are properly recorded. This classification ensures accuracy of entries to ledger accounts and reconciles accordingly. The Accountant compiles financial data to aid in preparation of District financial reporting and assists in analyzing current financial trends to predict future revenues and expenses while in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Accountant classification does not have supervisory responsibilities.

 

ALLOCATION OF POSITIONS
This series classification includes Accountant I and II. The Accountant II classification within the series has an expected increase in accounting knowledge and responsibility. In addition to performing the core responsibilities outlined for this role, the Accountant II is expected to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the District and perform accounting functions with a higher level of complexity. Positions allocated to this series may perform the full spectrum of duties described herein or concentrate in one or more areas of support. The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from performing day-to-day accounting operations to focused and specialized duties. Allocation of positions to a level within the series is determined by a review of the nature and complexity of work performed. Factors include the degree of independence in performing the work; the complexity of the work and the knowledge, skills and abilities required; the scope of responsibility; the consequences of error; the authority to take action/decision making; and the employee’s related experience. Other factors may include the size of the department, division, or workgroup the employee supports, reporting relationships, and placement in the organization.
Accountants are expected to use their expertise to contribute to the achievement of the District’s mission, vision and values. The duty statements listed are intended to be representative of the level, but all factors must be considered in relation to the duties assigned to a position to determine the appropriate class of I or II.

The Accountant classification plays a pivotal role in assisting the District towards its goals. To do this effectively, employees within this classification need to possess a diverse set of skills.

Representative duties, and their associated skill set, may include:

 

Accountant I

  • Assist with preparing a variety of financial and accounting records and reports.
  • Assist with special projects within the finance department.
  • Assist with preparing and processing documents and reports for assigned accounting functions and ensures accuracy, completeness and appropriate coding.
  • Assist with accounts payable and receivable functions.
  • Perform data entry for manual accounting records.
  • Assist with reconciling accounting transactions and documentation, bank statements and the general ledger for assigned accounts.
  • Assist with maintaining a running balance on assigned accounts.
  • Establish and maintain a variety of records and files.
  • Perform general clerical tasks in support of assigned accounting functions
  • Assist with the annual audit by an outside firm; researches and provides information and documentation to supervisor.
  • Provide customer service and/or assistance to customers, employees, vendors, and the public as needed.
  • Assist in document production for public records requests.
  • Ensure adherence to District Policies and procedures and state regulations which govern the District’s finances.
  • Perform other related duties as required. 

 

Accountant II

  • Prepare and maintain a variety of financial and accounting records and reports.
  • Prepare and process documents and reports for assigned accounting functions and ensures accuracy, completeness and appropriate coding.
  • Assist with performing internal audits of finance department and District internal controls.
  • Perform accounts payable and receivable functions.
  • Perform data entry for manual accounting records and verifies accuracy.
  • Reconcile accounting transactions and documentation, bank statements and the general ledger for assigned accounts. Maintains a running balance on assigned accounts.
  • Establish and maintain a variety of records and files.
  • Perform general clerical tasks in support of assigned functions.
  • Assist with the annual audit by an outside firm; researches and provides information and documentation to supervisor.
  • Provide customer service and/or assistance to customers, employees, vendors, and the public as needed.
  • Assist in document production for public records requests.
  • Ensure adherence to District Policies and procedures and state regulations which govern the District’s finances.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Accountant I

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of previous accounting/finance experience.

Accountant II

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of previous accounting/finance experience.

Requires the ability to operate various technologies and software that are relevant to the position including computer, copier, scanner, printer, laminator, and postage machine. Must possess excellent knowledge of Microsoft and Google business suites.

Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations while maintaining a friendly, positive demeanor. Must possess conflict resolution skills and the ability to maintain a calm, composed presence in stressful situations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Ability
Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-20 pounds independently and 50 pounds with assistance). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.

Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Most tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors
Essential functions are regularly performed in an office setting with public contact and without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

 

REQUIREMENT TO WORK DURING DECLARED EMERGENCIES
Employees deemed as essential may be required to work during a declared emergency. On an incident-by-incident basis, the District will make the determination as to who will be required to work.
