We are currently hiring a Disability Management and Benefits Specialist to join the team at our underground salt mine located in Goderich, Ontario. This is an on-site position.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
How will you contribute to the team?
This position is responsible for administration of Canadian employee benefits programs, including group health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, retirement savings plans, wellness initiatives, and leaves of absence. This position works with Corporate Benefits on renewals, pricing and resolution of employee issues and concerns.
A significant component of this position involves disability management and return‑to‑work coordination, requiring the ability to interpret and critically assess medical documentation, functional abilities information, and workplace accommodation requirements in collaboration with insurers, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders.
- Administer group benefit plans, including enrollment, changes, terminations, and annual renewals in coordination with third-party providers and insurers.
- Serve as the main point of contact for employee inquiries related to benefits, leaves, and retirement programs, providing accurate and timely information.
- Coordinate weekly indemnity/short-term disability (STD), long-term disability (LTD), workers' compensation, and leave of absence programs (e.g., parental, medical, unpaid).
- Review, interpret, and assess medical documentation, functional abilities forms, and insurer medical reports to support disability claims management, accommodation planning, and safe return‑to‑work decisions.
- Liaise with disability insurers, WSIB case managers, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders to clarify medical restrictions, functional limitations, prognosis, and graduated return‑to‑work expectations.
- In conjunction with Corporate Benefits, support the annual benefits renewal process, collaborating with brokers and vendors to ensure cost-effective and competitive offerings.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, pension regulations, and privacy laws.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure timely updates in HRIS and benefits systems.
- Manage approved benefits communications and education initiatives, including onboarding sessions, wellness programs, retirement information sessions.
- Assist with internal audit requests, data reconciliations, and reporting to support internal controls and cost tracking.
- Support the development and implementation of new benefit initiatives and policies to enhance employee experience.
- Work closely with payroll and finance teams to ensure proper deductions, billing, and reconciliations.
- Lead the Goderich Mine Joint Accommodation Committee, develop and implement modified work plans, and ensure accommodations align with medically support functional abilities, operational requirements, CBA, and legislative obligations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What should you bring to the role?
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Health Administration, Disability Management/Insurance, Human Resources, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- 5+ years’ experience in a benefits-focused HR role with significant involvement in disability management, claims administration within a Canadian context.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of medical terminology, common medical conditions, injury classifications, and function limitations as they relate to disability claims, workplace accommodations, and return to work planning.
- Proven ability to critically review and analyze medical documentation and functional abilities information to determine appropriateness, consistency, and alignment with essential job duties and accommodations options.
- Proficient knowledge of Canadian benefits legislation, disability management standards, WSIB requirements, and human rights obligations and standards across multiple provinces.
- Demonstrated organizational skills, with proven attention to detail, accuracy and documentation standards.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with employees, healthcare providers, insurers, and union or management representatives as applicable.
- Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) with advanced Excel skills for tracking, analysis, and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Formal education or professional experience in medical administration, disability management, workplace health, insurance claims adjudication, or a related medical or health field.
- Experience working directly with disability insurers, WSIB, third-party administrators, and occupational health professional.
- Experience with HRIS and benefits administration platforms (e.g., UKG) is preferred.
- Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) or progress toward a relevant professional designation.

What is the work schedule?
- This is a Monday-Friday position, working 8-hours per day.
- If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate. A relocation package is available to those that qualify.
ABOUT THE POSITION
