Job Description

Position General Summary:

This position is an Essential position at the facility to ensure efficient operations and patient care. Employees hired into an Essential position are expected to report to work for their scheduled shifts regardless of the environmental weather and road conditions that may exist.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

The hospitalist is a physician who specializes in providing inpatient care in a hospital setting, focusing on managing the daily needs of patients and coordinating care across various specialties. They are experts in diagnosing and treating common hospital conditions and are familiar with hospital procedures and protocols. 

Duties of the hospitalist are:

    Patient care management- managing the day-to-day care of hospitalized patients, including diagnosis, treatment, and discharge planning.

    Coordination of care- collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure a cohesive approach to patient care.

    Medical expertise- performing medical procedures, ordering and interpreting tests, and prescribing medications as needed.

    Quality improvement- contributing to quality and process improvement efforts within the hospital.

    Communication and collaboration- facilitating communication and collaboration among the healthcare team to ensure effective patient care.

    Patient education- educating patients and their families about their conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.

    Resource management- practicing efficient and judicious use of hospital and healthcare resources.

Typical responsibilities of the hospitalist are:

    Patient rounds

    Test ordering and interpretation

    Medication and treatment

    Discharge planning

    Specialist communication as necessary

    Quality improvement initiatives

Facility General Responsibilities:

    Attend new hire orientation as scheduled by the CEO and physician recruiter

    Complete Department Orientation Initial Competency within 7 days of hire date

    Complete Department Initial Skills Competency within 90 days of hire date

    Follow facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures

    Respect cultural and religious practices of patients from all backgrounds

    Follow HIPAA regulations at all times

    Be punctual and dependent for assigned shifts

    Dress within the dress code requirements of the facility

    Identifies all patients using at least two identifiers verbally (name and DOB), and by checking ID bracelet

    Follows Hospital Wide and Department Specific policies and procedures

    Must interact with fellow physicians, guests, staff, and patients pleasantly, cooperatively, and effectively

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Ability to navigate EMR

    Sound understanding of physician practice and nationally accepted standards of patient care

    Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities

    Good Communication skills with ability to communicate appropriately with all age groups

    Ability to perform under stress and cope with difficult situations

    Good time management and organizational skills to complete patient care and documentation 

Position Requirements: Education, Work Experience, Licensure, Certifications;

    Graduate of a medical school. Must have successfully passed a national certification exam, be licensed, and provide proof of continuing education. 

    Five years of hospitalist experience preferred.

    Current Physician licensure in the State of Tennessee.

    Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification is required.

Working Conditions:

The Hospitalist may be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases, may be in contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. The Hospitalist must be able to handle emergency or crisis situations, may occasionally be subject to irregular hours, and  may be required to wear protective equipment as necessary.
