For over 100 years, YMCA Camp Cormorant has offered spirit, tradition, leadership, and exceptional facilities to campers. Founded in 1903, Camp Cormorant is one of the oldest overnight camps in the entire nation. The camp is nestled on 80 acres of wooded property with an extensive beachfront on Big Cormorant Lake. We are located approximately six miles south of Lake Park, MN, in the heart of Minnesota lakes country. No day at camp is just a typical day. The YMCA Camp Cormorant offers more than just a job - we offer the chance to make a lasting difference for the youth in our community!

 

Under the supervision of the Camp Coordinator, the Camp Wrangler is responsible for teaching basic horsemanship and riding skills to youth attending Camp Cormorant in a safe, fun, and supportive environment. This position also includes full responsibility for the daily care of camp horses and maintaining the barn and riding facilities. The Camp Wrangler serves as a positive role model and contributes to the overall camp experience for campers and families.

 

Horsemanship & Program Delivery

  • Teach basic riding and horsemanship skills to campers of varying ages and abilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans 

  • Conduct riding lessons in a safe, engaging, and age-appropriate manner

  • Assist with trail rides and lead-around activities for Camp KODA and Family Weekend

Horse & Facility Care

  • Provide daily care for camp horses, including feeding, watering, grooming, tacking, and monitoring healthcare needs

  • Maintain the barn and riding facilities by cleaning stalls, water buckets, and troughs

  • Keep the tack room, feed room, restroom, and barn areas neat, clean, and organized

Camper Supervision & Engagement

  • Greet campers and parents upon arrival and during check-in

  • Supervise campers in restroom/shower areas and cabins as needed

  • Assist with evening programs, campfires, and leading songs; lead one evening program per week

Safety & Administration

  • Ensure ACA standards and all camp safety policies are followed at all times

  • Report any accidents or incidents promptly to the Camp Coordinator

  • Attend staff meetings and actively participate in camper and parent check-in

  • Assist the Camp Coordinator with other camp duties as needed

Professionalism & Leadership

  • Serve as a positive role model to campers and staff through attitude and behavior

  • Uphold all safety, security, sanitation, scheduling, and sportsmanship standards

  • Complete an end-of-season evaluation

  • Clean all areas of responsibility on weekends and prior to camp closing

Requirements

2026 Camp Dates: May 31, 2026 - August 14, 2026, with the week of the 4th of July off. Must be available for the duration of the summer camp season. Room and board included. 

 

Required Experience/Qualifications:

1. At least 18 years old

2. 1 year of horsemanship experience – to include the care of horses

3. Overnight camp experience preferred

4. CPR/First Aid Certification for Adult, Child and Infant

5. Current driver’s license and YMCA insurance approved driving record

 

No personal animals allowed on Camp premises.
