Job Description

POSITION: Mechanic 

LOCATION: Support Services Facility - Transportation Department

HOURS: 6:00AM – 2:30PM (8 hours per day with ½ lunch)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   12 Month According to School Calendar 

REPORTS TO:  Lead Mechanic / Director of Transportation

    • All required Certificates and/or Course Transcripts must be on file in the Classified/Human Capital Department 

PURPOSE OF POSITION:  Maintain a program to provide a safe and reliable bus fleet and Board owned support vehicles.  Perform all daily general mechanical duties, as needed.  Including, on road emergency repairs, periodic inspection in conjunction with the State of Ohio inspection process, and practice maintenance procedures in order to reduce frequency of repairs and lower the cost of operation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Demonstrated record of successful employment.
  3. Minimum five years of experience as a school bus mechanic or equivalent.
  4. CDL License required.
  5. Must successfully pass a physical assessment including a material handling lift test up to 75 pounds.
  6. Meet the Sylvania Schools vehicle insurance criteria, and maintain the same.
  7. Appropriate BCII and FBI background checks required.
  8. A.S.E. certificates preferred.
  9. Knowledge and experience in the mechanic trade including shop equipment and tools.  Ability to detect vehicle defects, malfunctions, and perform appropriate repairs.
  10. Background in diesel mechanics, electrical systems, welding, and minor body work including painting.
  11. Required knowledge of computers, software, fleet maintenance programs, and ability to record/track data utilizing computers and its software. 
  12. Possess communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to interact well with drivers, district staff, and peers.
  13. Ability to perform tasks under sometimes demanding work situations. Promote customer-oriented service outlook.
  14. Must complete all training as required by Sylvania Schools and/or the Ohio Department of Education.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain efficient operations of the vehicle maintenance department and ensure that safe and satisfactory equipment is maintained at all times.
  2. Have experience with use of owner’s service manuals including computer/on-line versions provided by the vehicle manufacturer.
  3. Assist in continuation of program for preventative maintenance for Board vehicles.
  4. Assist with the summer bus maintenance program and prepare all buses for the spot and annual inspection by the Ohio Highway Patrol.
  5. Inspect buses, as necessary, to ensure cleanliness and safety.
  6. Keep the bus garage clean, orderly, and free of hazardous conditions.
  7. Promote good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, and communication.
  8. Attend In-Service training courses to further enhance the operation of the Transportation Vehicle Maintenance Department.
  9. Keep appraised of new and revised laws, codes, and other requirements related to transportation matters.
  10. Assist with plowing snow, as needed.
  11. Responsible for entering personal absences and clock in/out via the Red Rover System, and to communicate same-day absences to the Director of Transportation and Human Capital.
  12. Responsible to check your district email account on a regular basis, and to communicate as needed via email.  
  13. Perform other duties consistent with the function of the job or as assigned by the Transportation Director.


ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.
  2. Exposure to outside temperatures, humidity, extreme noise levels, vibration, slippery surfaces, machinery, and chemicals.
  3. Operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions.
