About the Department
Under direction of the Park Superintendent, supervises and monitors all park maintenance activities including medians and right-of-ways within budgetary limitations.
Position Duties
- Oversees the daily work activities of park maintenance crews to include assigning work tasks, monitoring and inspecting the work of crews, and provides direction and guidance on crew work tasks.
- Executes personnel/employee related tasks to include hiring, training, setting employee goals and objectives, scheduling work crews, evaluating, motivating, counseling, and disciplining employees.
- Communicates directly with the general public regarding park maintenance.
- Inspects the conditions of all parks, medians, and right-of-ways to ensure high standards of quality and maintenance.
- Performs continual assessments of operational and personnel functions and activities to identify any inefficiencies and implements corrective actions.
- Instructs workers in the proper and most expedient method to accomplish assignments.
- Ensures employees conduct daily vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance (including washing, checking, and servicing) of all equipment and vehicles.
- Identifies and reports hazards and liability exposures and immediately takes corrective action.
- Makes special reports and recommendations to supervisor as needed.
- Recommends and purchases items, supplies, tools, equipment, and other materials needed for athletic field operations and upcoming projects including securing price quotes.
- Ensures high standards of customer service.
- Monitors the application of herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers, and various other chemicals.
- Informs supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, public inquiries, and the status of all work-related activities.
- Performs the duties of all park maintenance personnel as needed.
- Adheres to personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
- Assists co-workers and other departments as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
- Must have an Associate's Degree in Landscape Operations, Turf Grass Management, or a related field OR in lieu of Associate’s degree, must have a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in park operations including related park maintenance, irrigation systems, equipment operation and maintenance experience, including three years of supervisory experience or three years’ experience leading a work crew.
- Must have five (5) years of park operations experience with three years of supervisory experience or experience leading a work crew.
- Must obtain pest applicator certification within 90 days of hire date.
- Must be able to obtain a valid Texas Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver's License, with proper endorsements and without restrictions, within six (6) months from the date of hire. Your driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
- Must obtain Certified Playground Safety Inspector and Certified Pool Operator within 12 months of hire date.

- Perform strenuous physical activities to include, exerting up to 100 lbs of pressure; lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects to include trimmers, mowers, tree limbs, and other equipment and supplies up to 100 lbs. several times a day; shovel; crawl; bend; kneel; dig holes for several hours per day; climb on and off equipment; operate vibrating equipment; work indoors, underground, outdoors, in confined spaces, in trenches, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and muddy terrain, and under constant noisy conditions; and work in adverse environmental conditions to inclement weather such as rain, sleet, snow, heat, sun exposure, fume odor, dust/mist, and hazardous conditions such as, chemicals and exposure to insects, noxious plants, and snakes.

Knowledge/ Skills / Abilities
- Must have a good working knowledge of proper safety procedures, turf, landscape, irrigation, baseball field maintenance procedures, light to heavy landscape and related equipment, and safety procedures.
- Must be able to exercise good judgment; make competent decisions; handle multiple projects; prioritize and organize work assignments; meet deadlines; and work well under pressure and stress.
- Must have good leadership, organizational, supervisory, problem solving, and training skills.
- Must have good hand/foot/eye coordination to operate and repair equipment and vehicles; follow oral and written directives.
- Must be able to maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with employees, contractors, and the general public.
- Must be able to work extensive hours, as needed.
