Under limited supervision, responsible and accountable for operation, maintenance and repair of the hospital heating, refrigeration, air conditioning and ice making equipment.
This position will be located at Henry Ford St. John's Hospital and Medical Center- Detroit, MI.
Responsibilities
- Installs, inspects, maintains, repairs and performs preventative maintenance on all heating, air conditioning, ice making, refrigeration and ventilation systems.
- Maintains and applies current knowledge of steam distribution, piping, valves, chilled and hot water reheat systems and Pressure Reducing Value (PRV) Operation
- Follows manufacturer’s instructions and specifications in operation, repair and maintenance of systems and equipment
- Regulates and adjusts refrigerant flow and valves to maintain required temperatures. Read thermometers and gauges and records readings.
- Uses, replaces and recovers refrigerants, and maintains recovery equipment in accordance with CAA 608 guidelines.
- Sets up preventive maintenance jobs and completes maintenance work. Detects, investigates and accounts for malfunctioning equipment and uses hand tools and equipment necessary for minor, major and emergency repair.
- Works with and gives direction to Refrigeration Assistants, Mechanic II, Mechanic I and STA.
- Checks joints for leaks, solders joints, traces control wires, replaces valves. Changes air filters and cleans equipment.
- Receives assignments and work orders.
- Reviews work orders for priority status and designated time schedules.
- Reads and interprets specification, schematic diagrams, and blueprints.
- Requisitions materials and supplies; prepares and assembles materials, tools, supplies and equipment for work to be performed.
- Maintains items in stock, cleans equipment and reports on malfunctioning equipment. Protects equipment against mishandling.
- Maintains all required records and documents relative to operation of refrigeration and cooling equipment.
- Maintains required records regarding the use and recovery of refrigerants and their disposal.
- Maintains appropriate instruction manuals, technical documents, schematics, and blueprints. Completes all work orders in a timely, legible manner in order that complete and meaningful equipment histories are maintained.
- Responds to emergency calls in a timely manner.
- Applies cost-effective measures in order to improve efficiency and supports cost containment efforts while delivering a high-quality service. Provides Values-Added customer service consistent with hospital policy.
- Keeps work area clean, orderly, and safe. Assures proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrate safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department programs. Improve patient safety in the delivery of health care by understanding and supplying the patient safety goal for SJPHS/Ascension of no preventable deaths or injuries.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required. Related trade school or equivalent training- required.
License/Certification:
- 608 EPA Certification Universal or Unlimited Refrigeration and Air Condition Service- required.
Experience:
- Three to five years required- required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work with power equipment; ability to work with hazardous equipment.
