Position Title


Early Grades Intervention Tutor


Compensation: $40.00 per hour


Schedule: Part-Time / Temporary (5 hours per day, 5 days per week)


Duration: 83 Days 


General Definition and Conditions of Work


The Early Grade Tutor is a grant-funded instructional position designed to provide targeted academic support to students during the school day. The primary focus of this role is to deliver small group interventions in literacy and mathematics to students currently performing below grade level. The Tutor will utilize division and state assessment data to drive instruction and close achievement gaps. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal.


 


This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Some teaching specialties (i.e. music, art, physical education, etc.) may require hearing, vision, physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of those listed above.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Strong knowledge of early literacy and numeracy development.

  • Ability to interpret student data (SOLs, VALLS, benchmarks).

  • Strong classroom management skills for small group settings.


Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

  • Small Group Instruction: Plan and facilitate small group tutoring sessions focused on literacy (reading/writing) and mathematics for identified students.

  • Intervention: Implement evidence-based intervention strategies to assist students who are performing below grade level benchmarks.

  • Data Usage: Review and analyze division and state assessment data to identify specific student needs and monitor progress over time.

  • Collaboration: Coordinate with classroom teachers to ensure tutoring activities align with current curriculum and grade-level standards.

  • Progress Monitoring: Maintain accurate records of student attendance and academic progress during tutoring sessions; adjust instructional techniques as needed based on student performance.

  • Environment: Create a positive and encouraging learning environment that fosters student confidence and engagement.

Education and Experience


 



  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field required. Possession of (or eligibility for) a Virginia Teaching License is highly preferred.

  • Experience: Previous experience teaching or tutoring early elementary grades (K-5) in reading and mathematics.


Terms of Employment



  • Funding Source: Title I Grant 2025-2026 

  • Work Schedule: The position requires a commitment of 5 hours per day, Monday through Friday

  • Contract Length: This is a temporary position limited to 83 working days for the specified school year

  • Continuation: Employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funds
