Job Description

About the Department

Under the general supervision of the County Engineer, the Staff Engineer- EIT performs skilled and technical engineering duties related to transportation system planning and maintenance projects.

Position Duties

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position. The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list and may change with or without notice. Incumbents must be able to perform the essential function of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Conducts engineering studies related to County transportation system planning, design, construction, and maintenance
  • Develops overall design concepts and prepares details for transportation infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and drainage systems
  • Utilizes AutoCAD Civil 3D to develop plan and profile sheets, estimates, and detailed design documents
  • Prepares design specifications for transportation-related projects
  • Performs engineering calculations to determine quantities, areas, and project costs
  • Conducts or oversees construction inspections, materials testing, construction staking, and surveying to ensure compliance with project specifications and contract requirements 
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation, including field notes, daily logs, and project reports, in accordance with County, State, and Federal requirements 
  • Manages a comprehensive inventory of County road surfacing types, bridges, and culverts; ensures timely reporting to the North Dakota Department of Transportation and other agencies 
  • Maintains project files and provides project management for road and bridge improvement projects directly or through coordination with consulting engineers
  • Performs traffic analysis by deploying and retrieving radar traffic counters; interprets data to inform roadway planning and maintenance decisions
  • Assists with special assessment projects in accordance with the North Dakota Century Code
  • Assists in the review of engineering plans and plat submissions through the County Planning and Zoning Board and the Building Department
  • Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Must be registered as or working towards Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in North Dakota
  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening

Other Qualifications

  • Work is performed in an office setting and an outdoor environment with exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather
  • Some work is performed on construction sites with exposure to uneven ground, loud noises, chemicals, and construction equipment
  • Must be able to lift/carry 50lbs

Compensation: Starting pay ranges from $42.33 to $46.56 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
