Job Description

About the Department

A Recreation Leader plans, leads, participates in and supports a variety of recreational programs at various recreation center facilities throughout the City.  The incumbent provides supervision to program activities or services; organizes and implements programs including materials preparation, publicity, registration, set-up and break-down; and oversees participants, who may range in age from pre-schoolers to those 55 and older.  If assigned to Kidszone, this position may be a Kidszone Teacher. 

This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Position Duties

Education / higher education:   High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience:  One year planning, developing and conducting recreation activities, programs, events, arts & craft activities and/or special events. 
Education and/or experience preferences:    none
Driver’s License requirement:    Infrequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License     Required Endorsements:  None
Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.
Required certifications, licenses or registrations:  Depending on the assignment, any or all of the following may be required:  Certificates for First Aid, CPR, AED, CYFD Certification, CYFD preschool teacher course, cash handling training, and Defensive Driving. 
Time given after hire/promotion to obtain certification or licenses:  Within six months of hire date; may require yearly CYFD certification for Kidzone staff.
Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations:   none
 Additional requirements if working with Kidszone – this position serves as a Kidszone Teacher:

  • Take 45 hours of training in NM Early Care, Education and Family Support
  • Complete competency courses in Early Childhood Education (24 hours of training annually in one of 7 required areas)
  • Take 8 hours of training in CPR annually.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:  Some knowledge of recreation activities; Some knowledge of rules, equipment, and materials necessary for a variety of common sports, games, and activities suitable for all ages; Basic principles and techniques of First Aid and proper response in an emergency situation.
Skills:     Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position.   Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment.  Operation of standard office equipment, including personal computer; Creative problem solving skills required in areas of activity coordination, and dealing with members of the public; Clear concise oral and written communication to prepare activity reports and provide information.
Abilities:  Work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings; Understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; Learn to conduct a variety of recreation activities; Perform simple monetary transactions, such as making correct change and keeping routine records; Establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with league participants, staff members, volunteers, and the general public; Effectively communicate and manage conflict in a recreation setting; Recognize and appropriately respond to a variety of conditions affecting participant safety; Adhere to program standards and objectives outlined in city policy and by supervisors; Enforce sport and activity rules and regulations; Prepare written reports, maintain attendance and activity records, and maintain registration records.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities:   Internal:  Works with recreational specialists and managerial staff on routine tasks and assignments.      External: General public, and program participants.

Other Qualifications

The following functions are typical for this position.  The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Supervise, direct and lead participants in recreation programs and special events. 
  • Assist in determining/procurement supplies and materials needed for programs and special events and in the preparation of program materials, publicity; registration, facility set-up and break-down to include, but not limited to, decorations and security.  
  • May transport program participants in City vehicles.  
  • May assist in ensuring safe recreational activities.  Involves preserving order and discipline among participants at a park, playground, sports field, or recreation center; performing first aid and CPR in case of injury; performing routine safety checks at facilities and watch for safety of participants and spectators; monitoring the facility to ensure all health and safety requirements are satisfied and routine maintenance is performed expeditiously. 
  • May plan and take ownership of small programs.
  • Perform a variety of administration duties to assist the recreation specialist in the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and special events. 
  • Assist in surveys of the community in the assessment of existing programs and the development of new program. 
  • Assist in the monitoring the quality of the programs.  
  • May assist with preparing activity reports, data collection and training of volunteers.
  • Assist in supporting recreation activities, including greeting the public and directing to appropriate activities; answering phones and providing information regarding facilities activities; registering participants for classes, leagues, etc.; distributing flyers and marketing materials; may attend fairs and open houses promoting City recreational programs; collecting fees and preparing receipts; maintaining records such as attendance and equipment inventory as required; opening and closing facility in accordance with established procedures; and serving as needed for emergency response and recovery.
  • Provides office or recreation center assistance as required, including providing facility coverage for rentals; basic housekeeping duties such as vacuuming, dusting, straightening, washing and cleaning of center and maintenance/cleaning of City vehicles.
  • May be responsible for changing Division marquee as needed.
