Tri Pointe Connect, the mortgage affiliate of Tri Pointe Homes, is looking for an experienced individual to join our talented group in Arizona as a Director of Underwriting. This position will be located in Scottsdale, Arizona working a hybrid schedule (M-W in office/Th-Fri remote).

Position Summary: The Director of Underwriting is responsible for the strategic leadership, performance, and oversight of the underwriting function. This role ensures sound risk management, adherence to regulatory and investor guidelines, and alignment with company objectives. The Director establishes underwriting policies and risk frameworks, drives consistency in decisioning, and ensures loans are underwritten accurately, efficiently, and in a manner that supports salability across all investor channels, works closely with Credit Risk to align on risk appetite, guideline interpretation, and exception management, ensuring consistent and well-governed credit decisions, and collaborates cross-functionally with Production, Processing, Closing, Secondary, and Compliance to optimize workflows, improve loan quality, and enhance the overall customer experience. The Director is accountable for underwriting capacity planning, productivity, and team development, while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
• Provide leadership and day-to-day operations within the underwriting department to ensure excellence in customer service, compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulations, as well as productivity and quality are met and/or exceeded.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters to achieve established performance, quality, and service-level goals.
• Establish and enforce underwriting policies, procedures, and risk tolerance aligned with agency, investor, and regulatory requirements.
• Review and approve complex or high-risk loan files, including exceptions and escalations.
• Monitor pipeline metrics, productivity, and turn times; implement strategies to improve efficiency and scalability.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and investor guidelines (e.g., FHA, VA, FNMA, FHLMC, jumbo, and non-QM products).
• Partner with Production, Processing, Secondary Marketing, Compliance, and Quality Control teams to optimize workflows and loan quality.
• Oversee quality assurance and audit processes; respond to findings and implement corrective actions.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including automation, technology adoption, and process standardization.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, guideline changes, and regulatory updates.
• Participate in strategic planning, including capacity forecasting, staffing models, and budget management.
• Recruit, hire, train, and conduct on-going performance management with team.
• Conduct one-on-one meetings with team.
• Participate in operational meetings with team leaders.
• Other projects and duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
• 8 or more years of mortgage underwriting experience, including 5+ years in a leadership role
• DE (Direct Endorsement) and SAR (VA) certification required
Skills:
• Expertise with agency knowledge to include FNMA, FHLMC, FHA/VA and non-agency underwriting guidelines.
• Strong understanding of credit risk analysis, income calculation, collateral valuation, and fraud detection
• Risk management & compliance driven
• Proven leadership and team development skills
• Strategic thinking and recognized for operational excellence
• Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical abilities
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collabortively across departments
• Experience with Loan Origination Systems (e.g., Encompass) and automated underwriting systems (DU/LP)
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
• Experience scaling underwriting operations in a high-volume environment
• Familiarity with digital mortgage platforms and automation tools
• Attention to detail
• Adaptable and a change agent
Physical Requirements:.
• May be sedentary for extended periods, up to 4 hours
• Visual acuity for detailed computer work
• Using fine motor skills for tasks requiring precision such as typing
• After hours/weekend, as needed
