Job Description

Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists is looking for a Medical Assistant to join our Ambulatory Surgery Center team. The Medical Assistant assigned to the pain department, working under the direction of the physician and the nursing supervisor. The MA assists in the care of patients during an elective interventional pain management procedure.  

NWOS is closed all weekends and major holidays. No night shifts or on-call.

Essential Functions:

Duties, responsibilities and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.

  1. It is the expectation of all NWOS employees to demonstrate and uphold all 19 NWOS Fundamentals.
  2. Rooms patients, records vital signs, enters/updates medications, verifies allergies and lists reaction, and updates/verifies pharmacy.
  3. Preps charts the day before or morning of clinic, including, but not limited to: gathering ER notes, op-notes, office notes from other providers, review present chart to assess types of documents needed for the day, what x-rays are indicated, and read the provider’s previous notes for directions.
  4. Admits patients by interviewing and documenting current medications, screenings, and medical history questions for RN and MD review.
  5. Opens and preps exam rooms, stocks supplies as indicated. Cleans exam rooms between patients when necessary.
  6. Provides pre-procedural education per provider’s protocol and procedure type, record in EHR and gives to patient.
  7. Performs fundamental and clinical procedures of a medical assistant-registered (MA-R) or medical assistant-certified (MA-C) outlined under the Washington State Legislature. These duties are delegated by, and under the supervision of a health care practitioner. These duties include but are not limited to:
    1. Blood Glucose, INR, pregnancy tests
    2. EKG
    3. IV removal
    4. Preparing for sterile procedures
    5. Disposing of biohazardous material
  8. Assist MD in interventional Pain procedures
  9. Participates in Procedural Time Outs as required.
  10. Documents non-sedation procedures in the EMR.
  11. Orders tests – X-rays, CT, US, MRI, lab draws, physical therapy referral per provider’s request.
  12. Calls patients with test results based upon written and/or verbal instructions from the provider.
  13. Provides discharge instructions and/ or specific education related to pain diaries with patients based on type of procedure.
  14. Transports patients via stretcher or wheelchair within the facility or parking structure safely with proper body mechanics.
  15. Follow guidelines for universal precautions and isolation procedures.
  16. Maintains 90% accuracy in EHR charting.
  17. Works in collaboration with other staff to ensure clinical compliance with all mandated patient safety regulations.
  18. Maintains a safe and clean working environment consistent with OSHA, HIPAA, and other clinical guidelines along with NWOS standards. Recognizes and takes action on potentially unsafe acts. Assists with codes, fire drills and actual emergency situations.
  19. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with providers, patients, patient families, visitors, co-workers, executive staff, and other NWOS employees in a professional and confidential manner.
  20. Demonstrates initiative, seeks additional responsibility as able; works through challenges and adjusts to unexpected changes.
  21. Employee follows through on commitments, meets time requirements, and quickly responds to requests.  Employee maintains satisfactory attendance, is present, punctual and prepared to work when scheduled.
  22. Respects the feelings of others and is polite on the job.
  23. Keeps supervisor informed of problems or issues.
  24. Maintains strict patient confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA regulations.
  25. Conducts self in accordance with current NWOS employee handbook and policies and procedures.
  26. Completes all NWOS required trainings as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification in the State of Washington or Medical Assistant Registration. The employee pays for the initial application and subsequent renewals for registration or certification upfront and receives reimbursement from NWOS
  • A valid BLS certification

Preferred:

  • One to two years of experience in a similar role, preferably in interventional pain management.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and ability to operate modern office equipment and software.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy, specifically orthopedics.
  • Knowledge of safety principles and infection control in the patient care environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to learn unfamiliar tasks and equipment operations.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and critical thinking skills as well as the ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Medical Assistant position holds no supervisory responsibilities.

 WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an ASC environment. Interaction with staff and patients is constant and interrupted.  Work requires long periods of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending and stretching as well as potential exposure to bodily fluids and sharps. Work requires the ability to assist with lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination. Normal visual acuity and hearing are necessary (corrective devices may be used if indicated). Work may occasionally be performed in emergency or stressful situations when working with patients who may be sick, irritable, upset or confused. Must be flexible with work time and hours and be able to work in an environment which may be fast paced and stressful.

    Hiring Range: $18.75 - $33.32
