Job Description

CAMP YOUNG BUS DRIVER (Part-Time)  


 


This part time position has a AM shift (approx. 8:15 AM - 10:15 AM) and/or a PM shift (approx. 1:15 - 3:15 PM) with up to 20 hours of work available each week. 


 


DEFINITION 


 


The work of positions assigned to this class involving the transportation of regular and special education students to and from Camp Young.  An employee in this class is responsible for providing safe transportation of students.  Work involves driving a bus on designated routes to pick up and drop off students, helping children with special needs to board and exit bus, and performing daily safely checks on assigned bus.   


 


SUPERVISION 


 


Work is performed under the general supervision of a Field Supervisor, but the school bus driver responsibilities require all driving duties to be performed independent of on-site supervision.  Supervision is exercised over students during transport duties.   


 


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 


 


This class includes drivers of buses which transport regular students and/or students with identified physical, mental, and/or emotional disabilities. 


 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (Performs a variety of duties delineated in one or more of the following sets.) 


 


Drives bus on designated routes picking up and dropping off students as scheduled to and from Camp Young.  Students with physical disabilities may require assistance to board and exit bus, to get into seats, and to be safely secured before moving the bus. 


 


Performs and records daily pre-trip checks on bus and bus components including inspection of tires, lights, fuel level, oil level, and windshield wipers.  Defective equipment must be reported immediately to ensure timely repair. 


 


Completes daily and monthly operations reports indicating times, mileage, and routes. 


 


Completes bus incident reports as necessary. 


 


Cleans interior and exterior of bus by sweeping floors, dusting and washing seats, cleaning windows. 


 


Communicates with dispatcher, supervisor utilizing two-way radio transmitter. 


 


Meets with parents, teacher, principals, or other school officials on occasion to express and listen to concerns regarding bus operation, scheduling, and safety. 


 


Reports violations of state school bus law (other drivers) as required. 


 


Performs related work as required. 


 


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 


 


Good knowledge of bus handling and safety techniques. 


 


Good knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules, regulations, and of local street and road systems. 


 


Some knowledge of basic first aid. 


 


Ability to safely drive a school bus. 


 


Ability to read, write and complete forms and reports. 


 


Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, and school officials. 


 


Ability to maintain effective control over groups of children or young adult students and to ensure student behavior is not distractive to safe driving. 


 


Ability to operate wheelchair lift and secure wheelchairs. 


 


Ability to properly use a fire extinguisher. 


 


Ability and willingness to assist physically, mentally, and emotionally disabled students in being transported to and from school. 


 


MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 


 


Completion of a high school education, or General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or training as a bus driver, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above knowledge, skill, and ability. 


 


LICENSE/CERTIFICATION 


 


Work requires a valid Virginia State Class B Commercial Driver's License with the following endorsements:  Passenger, School Bus, and Air Brakes. 


 


PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES 


 


Sufficient vision and visual acuity to operate a bus during assigned periods. 


 


Work requires bending, lifting, sitting for sustained periods. 


 


HAZARDS 


 


Work may involve exposure to road hazards including accidents and driving during inclement weather conditions. 


 


Work may involve exposure to student body fluids. 


 


Work may involve exposure to fumes from bus exhaust systems.


Work is confined primarily to a school bus. 


 


Work requires being seated for extended periods of time. 


 


Work may involve driving while students are noisy and disruptive. 


 


UNUSUAL DEMANDS 


 


Driving record must comply with Virginia School Law.  Must remain in compliance with state, county, and local laws and regulations regarding use of controlled substances and alcohol, as applied to school bus drivers. 


 


Work may include lifting non-ambulatory, “dead-weight” students.
