Description

The Assistant Unit Director is responsible for supervising and leading an assigned cabin group, ensuring a safe, engaging, and supportive camp experience. This role provides leadership to campers and staff, steps in for the Unit Director as needed, and actively participates in all camp activities with a positive and professional attitude. We are welcoming, supportive, and committed to helping everyone grow.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Participate in and assist with Administrative Staff Training and All Staff Training
  • Assume Unit Director responsibilities in their absence
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for campers and staff
  • Support campers in achieving personal goals and overall development
  • Address individual and group concerns with appropriate guidance and support
  • Follow all established health, safety, and emergency procedures
  • Plan and lead cabin and unit activities in collaboration with campers
  • Supervise all aspects of campers’ daily routines, including meals, activities, rest periods, evening programs, and overnight supervision
  • Lead nightly “Cabin Chat” discussions
  • Instruct campers on emergency procedures (fire, severe weather, lost camper, and tag calls)
  • Teach or assist with coaching periods as assigned
  • Serve as a Lifeguard or Lookout at the waterfront as needed
  • Participate in weekend programming, unit duty, and special events
  • Attend and actively engage in staff trainings, meetings, and supervisory sessions
  • Supervise Counselors and Leaders-in-Training (LITs) as assigned
  • Model and promote the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
  • Enforce all camp policies and procedures consistently
  • Maintain positive relationships with parents, visitors, and the community
  • Complete and submit all required documentation in a timely manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Strong desire and ability to work with children and peers in an outdoor environment
  • Experience supervising staff and managing camp activities
  • Ability to plan and schedule programs, facilities, and staff effectively
  • Serves as a positive role model with high integrity and adaptability
  • College sophomore or equivalent, or at least 19 years of age
  • Strong communication skills and ability to supervise and instruct campers of varying ages and skill levels
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations, and apply effective behavior-management techniques
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental hazards and activity-related risks
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and provide first aid
