Job Description

St. Mark’s Episcopal School in Houston, Texas is seeking a creative, organized, team player to serve as a Middle School Mathematics Teacher.  Focusing on 7th Grade Pre-Algebra and 8th Grade Geometry, our Middle School Mathematics Teacher is an important member of the Middle School faculty and reports directly to the Head of Middle School. We are looking for a dynamic, forward-thinking and student-centered professional educator who is motivated by problem solving and leading students at this stage of their development. 

 

Duties:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
  • Follow a scope of sequence and lesson plans adjusting progress based on student readiness.
  • Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs.
  • Regularly review materials and request new materials as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
  • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
  • Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources, and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.
  • Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
  • Create an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Serve as a Middle School Advisor, guiding a small group of students in acquisition of study skills, executive functioning skills, and character development.
  • Participate in school meetings and parent conferences.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress.
  • Teach Geometry to a group of 8th grade students during Zero Hour 4 days per week.
  • Supervise lunch duty and dismissal duty on a regular basis.
  • Provide materials for substitute teachers.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of Middle School.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • An understanding of and a passion for teaching the middle school-aged child.
  • A collaborative and joyful spirit.
  • A working knowledge of technology resources in education.
  • A bachelor’s degree in education or a math-related field, advanced degree preferred.
 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Work in a sometimes highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges. 
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, stoop, and reach overhead. 
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment and intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
