Substitute Special Education Paraeducator & Paraeducator

Job Description 

Substitute position is an on-call position and not eligible for benefits or union membership.

DEFINITION

Under the direction of a teacher, or other professional staff member, the job of Paraeducator is to provide instructional and other support services in various classroom settings to students.  This position will require the paraeducator to support academic, behavioral, language and/or physical needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

·         Communicate with teachers, staff, support services and students

·         Collaborate and foster teamwork

·         Assist staff with other activities when available

·         Assist/monitor student(s) to and from bus when needed

·         Assist/monitor student(s) recess period – indoors and outdoors when needed

·         Assist/monitor student(s) in lunchroom and hallways as appropriate. 

·         Assist with feeding skills with appropriate supervision/training

·         Assist/monitor student(s) with toileting and other physical needs - this includes providing physical assistance to a student during the act of toileting while in the toileting location (see toileting definition below)

·         Assist with care, correct use and maintenance of adaptive equipment

·         Assist student(s) during emergency situations, drills and field trips

·         Assist student with instructional activities as outlined by staff; utilize strategies to modify materials as directed

·         Implement behavioral intervention plan and procedures as needed

·         Attend ongoing training as needed

·         Maintain the same level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as expected by staff

·         Refer any questions or concerns from parents to appropriate staff members

·         Assist student(s) to complete lesson activities, assignments and assessments

·         Assist in implementation of test accommodations/modifications during test administration

Definition of toileting: Due to a child’s disability or medical condition, the Special Education Paraeducator must provide physical assistance to a student during the act of toileting while in the toileting location. (Examples: removing all undergarments, wiping, physically assisting onto and off the toilet area).  Walking a child to the bathroom or providing supervision while in the bathroom which does not require physical contact, would not be defined as toileting.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Basic knowledge and willingness to learn appropriate use of technology.
  • Must have desire to work with students with special needs.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Maintain confidentiality of students and their records.
  • Understand basic elements of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Participation in all GSD required health-related training.  First Aid and CPR training may be required.
  • Willingness to participate in appropriate training to gain necessary skills to perform the position.

SKILLS KNOWLEGDE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

·         Skills to perform basic clerical functions, perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate standard office equipment, use English in verbal and written form, use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.

·         Knowledge of principles of child development and instructional processes.

·         Abilities to sit from prolonged periods, understand and conduct oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality of student records, meet schedules and deadlines, read/interpret/apply rules, regulations, policies, rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations.  Significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity, managing exposure to bodily fluids and maintaining hygiene protocols. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this class.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee is regularly required to hear and speak to exchange information in a proficient manner, as well as a sense of smell for safety issues related to fire smoke, gas leaks, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand and walk; hear and speak to exchange information in a proficient manner in person and by telephone; use hands and fingers to touch, handle, feel, grasp or operate standard office equipment including technology; and reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. The employee is occasionally required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb and balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. The employee may be subject to physical and emotional outbursts by students, including such

behaviors as kicking, spitting, scratching, biting, and running; the employee must be able to run quickly for brief spurts; should this occur, a meeting will be conducted to discuss preventative actions. The employee may need to lift and/or position students as necessary.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability it adjusts focus. The employee must have hand-eye coordination and be able to read printed material and computer or other technology screens. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Employees regularly work in a classroom environment and an outdoor working environment, including exposure to seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.   The employee will work under typical classroom conditions which are moderately quiet, but will encounter a loud, noise level both indoors and outdoors, occasionally. Employees are subject to exposure to minor contagious illnesses, blood and other bodily fluids and possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens.  The employee occasionally drives to district sites, training facilities, community meetings and other locations as needed.  The employee is subject to constant interruptions.
