Job Description

The Research Network Engineer is responsible for guiding our network product portfolio by identifying key technology development directions. You will build sample networks that mimic space based network topologies, and then explore the function of various network protocols and management techniques across those topologies. You will explore the best architectures and protocol stacks for layer 2 switching protocols in environments where network nodes are non-stationary (e.g. in orbit) and where latency is higher than normal due to the great distances involved. You will explore layer 3 IP routing protocols in a dynamic environment, where underlying topologies are changing. You will manage a network test lab to mimic customer environments so that modems, software, and optical terminals can be stress tested and certified.

Who you are

  • Demonstrated experience managing production IP over Ethernet networks at scale.
  • Experience in modern, high speed networks such as Janet / Géant / Internet2 either in research or industrial applications.
  • Familiarity with wavelength division multiplexing and photonic switching, especially for 5G backhaul or fibre optical data centre exchange networks, O-RAN etc.
  • Strong understanding of layer 2 protocols, including Ethernet framing, Ethernet switching, ARP, Spanning Tree, MAC authentication, 802.1q, and 802.1p,
  • Working knowledge of MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing): Designing architectures that allow lower-latency at the edge of a network.
  • Working knowledge of MPLS configuration and operation.
  • Skills in software defined networking and network function virtualization to dynamically slice the network for different use cases.
  • Familiarity with orchestration & resource management: Using algorithms (and increasingly AI) to decide where to place a workload for reliability and latency: at the RRH, the local edge, or the central cloud
  • Strong understanding of layer 3 protocols, including IPv4, IPv6, eCPRI, interior gateway routing protocols, exterior gateway routing protocols, VLAN routing, DSCP, and QoS.
  • Strong understanding of network related utility protocols such as NTP, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Familiarity with layer 4 protocols and tuning, including TCP, UDP, and QUIC.
  • Familiarity layer 5+ protocols including SIP, H.323, SSH, HTTP(S), TLS, FTP, NFS, RTSP, VoIP, video, VPNs, etc.
  • Familiarity with layer 1 optical fibre concepts, use and interfacing, including SFP variants.
  • Adept at packet tracing and capture analysis.
  • Basic programming experience for automating tests and configurations.

Desired Qualifications

  • CCNA or similar qualification, or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with Cisco Modeling Labs or similar software emulation tools
  • Experience with radio access networks and 5G architecture a plus
  • Strong analytical and writing skills
  • Comfortable working in a Linux environment.
