Job Description

About the Department

This position can be filled as a Fleet Technician Assistant, I, II or III.
Pay will be commensurate based on Fleet Technician Level qualification.


Fleet Technician Assistant - Salary Range $22.0715 to $35.4522/Hourly DOQ.
Fleet Technician I - Salary range $22.7405 to $36.5561/Hourly DOQ.
Fleet Technician II - Salary range $23.6970 to $38.1342/Hourly DOQ
Fleet Technician III - Salary range $24.6965 to $40.4798/Hourly DOQ


Under the general direction of the Fleet Management Supervisor, performs skilled mechanical work of average difficulty and responsibility related to the maintenance and repair of automotive, light medium and heavy truck, fire apparatus and industrial/construction equipment. Incumbents possess knowledge and skill in the performance of mechanical tasks involving general repair, maintenance, and servicing of automotive and related equipment, and are capable of exercising good judgment and individual initiative in handling routine work and special assignment. Work is reviewed through reports, records, and the actual performance of the automotive equipment. Performs related work as required.

Position Duties

  • Repairs, reconditions, and performs preventative maintenance and service work and inspections on automotive, light/medium /heavy truck, Fire apparatus, and industrial/construction equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs varied equipment systems to include, but not limited to; drive train, suspension, hydraulic, electrical, water pump, heat/air conditioning, cooling, and brakes. 
  • Makes service calls and emergency repairs in the field as required. 
  • Maintains records and reports, requests parts and materials, and requisitions tools and equipment as required for the efficient performance of assigned repair work. 
  • Ability to identify replacement parts using manuals and other reference materials, requests parts and materials, and requisitions tools and equipment as required for the efficient performance of assigned repair work. 
  • Ability to operate a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone as a reference tool, as a diagnostic tool, and as a tracking tool for work orders, parts, and labor entry. 
  • Ability to work regularly scheduled hours and respond to emergency situations if required.

Minimum Qualifications

FLEET TECHNICIAN ASSISTANT

  • High school diploma or GED. (Proof must be uploaded with application).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of documented work experience in automotive and/or medium heavy truck or equipment repair service work.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License Class "A" within the probationary period. 
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain the ASE Automotive Brake certification withing the probationary period. 
  • Must possess own tools as per LIU union contract. 
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, work orders and time logs. 
FLEET TECHNICIAN I
  • High school diploma or GED. (Proof must be uploaded with application).
  • Minimum of four (4) years of documented work experience in automotive and/or medium heavy truck or equipment repair service work.
  • Must have and maintain a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License Class "A". Applicants who do not currently possess a Class "A" CDL must acquire a learner's permit within three (3) months of hire and obtain the license within six (6) months of hire. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver's license must obtain the Florida Driver's License within ten (10) days of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain any combination of at least four (4) ASE certifications in either the Automotive "A" series or the Medium/Heavy Truck "T" series or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must possess own tools as per LIU union contract
FLEET TECHNICIAN II
  • High school diploma or GED. (Proof must be uploaded with application). 
  • Minimum of six (6) years of documented work experience in automotive and/or light/medium/heavy truck or equipment repair service work.  
  • Must possess own tools as per LIU union contract.
  • Must have and maintain a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class "A”. Applicants who possess an valid out of state Commercial Driver’s License, Class A, must obtain the Florida license within 10 (ten) days of employment. 
  • Must have and maintain a Master ASE certification in either the Automotive “A” series or the Medium/Heavy Truck “T” series. 
FLEET TECHNICIAN III
  • High school diploma or GED. (Proof must be uploaded with application). 
  • Technical course work related to automotive service industry is preferred.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of documented work experience in automotive and/or light/medium/heavy truck and equipment repair service work.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class "A". Applicants who possess an valid out of state Commercial Driver’s License, Class A, must obtain the Florida license within 10 (ten) days of employment. 
  • Must possess and maintain two of the following master level professional certifications: ASE Master Level Automotive ("A" series) Technician, ASE Master Level Truck ("T" series) Technician, or EVT Master Level III Fire Apparatus Technician. Must possess own tools as per LIU union contract. Ability to maintain accurate records, work orders, and time logs.

Other Qualifications

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Ability to operate motor vehicles (i.e. pickup truck, van, etc.) and load or unload vehicles with objects weighing no more than 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to hear and understand conversation in a normal tone of voice.Use of senses which include sight, smell, hearing, and touch as aids in the evaluation and troubleshooting of malfunctioning equipment. 
  • Ability to see and read letters, numbers, words, characters,
  • or symbols which are both large and small, as well as identify colors. 
  • Ability to print and draw letters, numbers, words, characters, and symbols - must be legible and understood by others.Use of small hand tools - dexterity required.
