    Primary Purpose:

    Responsible for oversight of special education programs and services on campuses. Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, ensuring proper implementation of IEP's and serving as a resource to campus staff students and families. The coordinator collaborates with district administrators, teachers, and support staff to provide high quality education programs for students with disabilities.

    Provide curriculum leadership and support classroom teaching to ensure an aligned and articulated instructional program for special education.  Provide support to campus special education teachers on best practices, in order to raise the academic level and effectiveness of the district's overall curricular program

    Qualifications:

     

    Education/Certification:

    Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject assigned Special Education certification
    T-TESS certification preferred

    Master's Degree preferred

     

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

    Knowledge of curriculum design and implementation
    Ability to interpret data and evaluate instruction programs and teaching effectiveness
    Ability to develop and deliver training to adult learners
    Ability to work well with people, demonstrate and maintain productive and positive interpersonal skills

    Ability to collaborate with advocates on appropriate development and implementation of IEP

    Ability to design, train, implement, and check for fidelity of IEP writing
    Knowledge and experience implementing best practices in instruction in a variety of special education settings
    Knowledge and experience using a variety of assessment tools and analyzing student data
    Strong organizational, communication, time management, and interpersonal skills

    Experience:

    Five years of teaching experience in subject area assigned
    Experience teaching multiple grade levels preferred

     

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:

     

    Instructional and Program Management

    1. Work cooperatively with directors and campus principals in developing and supervising the instructional programs in assigned subject area.
    2. Coordinate the ordering and use of departmental instructional aids and materials for the department
    3. Evaluate the curriculum and instruction program effectiveness for the department based on evaluative findings (including student achievement data) and recommend changes as needed
    4. Maintain a resource library of publications, supplementary materials, and supplies relevant to the department
    5. Introduce teachers to methods, materials, and instructional strategies that, through research, have proven to increase student achievement.
    6. Vertically and horizontally align classroom norms across all settings
    7. Evaluate and manage systems for campuses to use when they are recommending a student transfer to another campus for a specific special education classroom

     

    Progress Monitoring:

    1. Assist the teachers in developing effective methods to monitor the progress or all students, and offer suggestions for interventions where needed
    2. Assist teachers in developing sound, defensible procedures for assessing student progress and for reporting that progress to students and parents in a timely manner
    3. Develop and maintain districtwide accommodation tracking system
    4. Develop and implement progress monitoring system for IEP's districtwide

     

    Staff Development:

    1. Plan and provide staff development for teachers, administrators, and staff in designated subject area.
    2. Train, guide, and mentor sped AP's
    3. Train campus LEA reps on running IEP meetings
    4. Disseminate information regarding current research and significant developments on the state and national levels in area assigned
    5. Assist in classroom observations and provide feedback and assistance to classroom teachers and campus instructional specialists to facilitate improvement and innovation. Demonstrate teaching strategies with students in classroom
    6. Provide STAAR Alt training to ensure planned instruction to support readiness
    7. Ensure all special education-related TEA trainings are met and documented
    8. Develop, train, and maintain procedures for counseling as a related service districtwide
    9. Provide feedback to diagnosticians when inconsistencies are found and/or practices need to shift

     

    Professional Growth and Development

    1. Participate fully in professional development for coaches, including professional research, reading, and training outside of normal work hours.
    2. Provide informal, ongoing professional development to teachers at point of need.
    3. Provide formal, ongoing professional development as requested by campus administration or the Special Services Director.

    Other

    1. Convey information to parent and community members about school programs.
    2. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
    3. Complete TEA audit and RDA responses
    4. Develop and maintain the district's system for confidentiality and acknowledgment signatures
    5. Create districtwide live guidance documents
    6. Reinforce timeout tracking districtwide through training and document availability
    7. Support campuses by addressing and/or mitigate advocate concerns, ensuring a proactive approach to proper paperwork and compliance (and attending ARDs)
    8. Develop and update extended school year support documents, including rubrics and data collection pieces
    9. Manage and align classroom schedules for special education classrooms, supporting campus staff in maneuvering the creation of a master schedule that supports inclusion practices
    10. Track student population for yearly projections

    1. Provide professional communication with students, parents, community members, staff, and other professionals at all times.
    2. Use proper phone etiquette at all times, speaking slowly and clearly.  Take reliable messages, and route to the appropriate staff.
    3. Ensure superior customer care skills are used via eye contact, facial expressions, voice inflections, body language, and an attitude of "going the extra mile" for others.
    4. Ensure all requests for information are dealt with in an appropriate timeframe.
