POSITION SUMMARY:

Healthy Weight and Your Child uses a co-leadership format, in which every class is led by both a Content Leader and Activity Leader. Responsibilities of each role is outlined in this job description. Content Leader: To facilitate the content portion of the Healthy Weight and Your Child program by delivering the standard curriculum designed for the program. To assist the activity leader during the movement portion of the program, as needed.  Activity Leader: To facilitate the movement activities for all individuals participating in the Healthy Weight and Your Child program, using an evidence-based physical activity curriculum, and promote the general safety of all participants. Will also assist, as needed, in the content portion of the program.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Deliver the content portion of the program in accordance with YMCA guidelines, following lesson plans accordingly.
  • Encourage group participation and interaction through the use of open-ended questions and facilitate commitment and retention of participants.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with children and adults and help them connect with each other and with the YMCA.
  • Encourage adult and youth involvement in all activities, goal setting, and overall participation.
  • Create a motivating environment that is friendly and noncompetitive.
  • Make learning a shared responsibility for the group.
  • Prepare before each class (i.e., be familiar with the session outline, review content for the class, place reminder calls to participants).
  • Be accessible to participants both before and after sessions to answer questions and follow up on questions that could not be answered during class time.
  • Follow up with participants outside of class if they are unable to attend.
  • Support and encourage goal setting on a weekly basis.
  • Convey information and program content, as appropriate.
  • Refer children and adults to other YMCA programs, as deemed beneficial.
  • Instruct the movement portion of the program in accordance with YMCA guidelines, following lesson plans accordingly.
  • Facilitate activities, as appropriate, and refer children and adults to other YMCA programs, as deemed beneficial.
  • Maintain records as required (i.e., attendance, goal tracking, and weight and other measurements) and enter data within 48 hours of the session .
  • Arrive for class on time and dressed appropriately.
  • Foster healthy living behaviors in a holistic manner.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, complete incident and accident reports, as necessary.
  • Organize and put away needed class equipment; report damaged equipment.
  • Assist the activity or content leader, as needed.
  • Support participants in all areas of the program.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certifications: Adult/Child CPR/AED and Basic First Aid certification within one month of hire
  • Must be flexible to work with adults and children
  • Must have strong communication skills, the ability to build strong relationships with individuals and build community within a group, and empathy for health seekers
  • At least 18 years of age

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Maintain a professional demeanor in both appearance and attitude.
  • Able to facilitate Healthy Weight and Your Child for the full program cycle spanning approximately four months.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Able to conduct energetic classes and activities for youth and adult participants.
  • Able to lift equipment, perform all physical aspects of the position, including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and assisting youth on and off equipment.
