    QUALIFICATIONS:      A valid Ohio High School Counselor Certificate.
                                             
                                              Master's Degree in Education (or higher) from an accredited college or university with specific emphasis in guidance and counseling.
     
                                              Counseling experience in group processes, special needs students, substance abuse education/intervention/prevention and guidance curriculum development.
     
                                              Successful completion of three or more years of high school teaching experience.
     
                                              Shows evidence of abilities in interpersonal communication, leadership and organization.
     
                                              Demonstrated experience working with parents and school personnel.
     
                                              Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication.
     
                                              Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

    RESPONSIBLE TO:      High School Principal
     
    GENERAL
    RESPONSIBILITIES:   Implements programs that promote positive self-concepts in students, provides opportunities to develop   interpersonal and academic skills and ameliorate social, behavioral and interactional problems within the high school.
     
    SPECIFIC DUTIES 
    AND 
    RESPONSIBILITIES:   Works with students individually as well as in small and large groups as appropriate in providing guidance and counseling services.
     
                                              Works one-to-one with students to identify problems which may be impeding a child's success in school and as a result identify or recommend strategies for overcoming these problems.
     
                                              Assists students in learning about courses/programs available and help students examine alternatives available to link a student's interests, needs and abilities with appropriate curriculum offerings.
     
                                              Provide opportunities for students to gain knowledge and understanding about careers with the changes occurring in the world of work along with the behaviors which will lead to success in obtaining and retaining a job.
     
                                              Provide opportunities for students and parents to gain knowledge and understanding of requirements and procedures for college and other post high school educational/work opportunities.
     
                                              Provide or assist in providing small group counseling for students to develop strategies to cope with peer pressure, familial concerns and other issues which impinge on a child's self-respect.
     
                                              Assist in the testing program as directed.
     
                                              Analyze and provide information which will help staff members better understand the needs of their students.
     
                                              Convey information and offer opportunities for parents to gain a greater understanding of a child at his/her developmental stage through programs and/or individual conference.
     
                                              Ensure parents and staff have a firm understanding of the role and responsibility of the guidance counselor and how to utilize these services.
     
                                              Works with principal, guidance director and other staff as appropriate in the organization of awards programs and graduation exercises.
     
                                              Works with principal, staff, parents and students to identify emerging guidance and counseling needs.
     
                                              Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the building principal my assign.
